Poor fielding display condemns holders to third straight loss in round-robin stage

Lisa Keightley, England’s head coach, says that she shoulders the blame for the collapse in form that has left her team’s defence of the World Cup hanging by a thread, following their third straight loss of the tournament, and their sixth ODI defeat in a row. After opening their campaign with narrow defeats to Australia and West Indies, England batted first in Mount Maunganui and posted 235 for 9 in their 50 overs, with half-centuries from Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones and five wickets for South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp.In reply, however, England missed a number of key opportunities in the field – most notably against Laura Wolvaardt, who anchored South Africa’s chase with 77 from 101 balls. Sune Luus and Kapp backed up their earlier efforts with the ball with a pair of important 30s, before Shabnim Ismail and Trisha Chetty sealed a three-wicket win with four balls to spare.England, who beat South Africa by two wickets in a similarly tense semi-final of the 2017 World Cup, now face four must-win contests in a row, starting with Wednesday’s clash with India in Mount Maunganui. Even that, however, might not now be enough for qualification with Australia, New Zealand and West Indies already better placed to push for a spot for the semi-final berths.”As a coach, I take a huge amount of responsibility,” Keightley said. “It’s up to me to drive the team and get the wins on the board, that’s the job of the coach. And we’re trying really hard, the coaching staff and myself, to get the players up and about and we don’t have to do too much.”The players are pretty gutted,” she added. “They were pretty gutted after the last match and they wanted to bounce back. They were unable to do it, so the responsibility and the buck lies with me and I’m happy to cop that.”Moving forward, do I feel the pressure? I don’t feel any more pressure than what the players feel and I’m no more disappointed than the players. We came into this World Cup wanting to play better than we have and we haven’t, and it’s been frustrating.”After an arduous winter campaign, which featured the disappointment of England’s Ashes defeat in Australia, the weariness of England’s fielding performance will raise inevitable questions about the fitness levels of the squad, with the veteran new-ball pairing of Anya Shrubsole and Katherine Brunt likely to come under particular scrutiny.Keightley, however, hinted that England would once again be relying on their experience of their proven matchwinners in the India game, rather than rotate them out, despite the likes of Freya Davies and Tash Farrant waiting in the wings as new-ball options.”We will have to have a look, see how they pull up, and make those decisions,” Keightley said. “They’ve done a great job for England over a number of years and they’re working really hard to do their job for the team. I think we’re on a new [pitch for the India match]. So it probably makes sense to play some senior bowlers.”Related

One bowler who did once again emerge with credit was the spinner Sophie Ecclestone, whose ten overs went for just 23 runs, including the key wicket of Mignon du Preez for 8.”Sophie has been amazing,” Keightley said. “She bowled well again today, and in the last games she has been fantastic. If we’d taken our chances in the Powerplay, we would have put pressure through the middle with Charlie [Dean] coming infor her first World Cup game. We tried really hard and created chances, we’re just not taking them.”We haven’t really put our finger on it really, we have fielded pretty well throughout the Ashes and took a lot more chances than we have today,” Keightley added. “The last two days, we’ve trained really well and the girls have been up and about and putting a lot of effort in.”We just haven’t got the rewards in the games that matter, so it is something that we’ll have to think about when we review after this World Cup.”Despite England’s bleak standing on the World Cup table – only Pakistan, with four defeats out of four, sit below them – Keightley is adamant that the round-robin format can still get them back into the qualification mix.”We’re trying hard to get those wins and once I think we win a close one, we’ll get a bit of momentum and finish strong,” she said. “We’ve just got to dust ourselves off, come back out in two days’ time and play the way we want to play.”

Ellis took career-best 4 for 28 while Inglis played a vital innings, coming off seven days of isolation to help Australia beat Pakistan

Nathan Ellis celebrates a wicket with Josh Inglis and Travis Head•Associated Press
Captain Aaron Finch predicts the future is bright for Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis after the inexperienced pair played a vital role in Australia’s one-off T20 international win against Pakistan in Lahore.Australia were missing David Warner, Mitch Marsh, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from the side that won the T20 World Cup, as well as regular squad members Kane Richardson and Jhye Richardson, who both played in Australia’s last T20I series against Sri Lanka. But the inexperienced side, that featured three T20I debutants in Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green and Ben Dwarshuis, got the better of Pakistan by three wickets.Green and Ellis wrestled the game back in Australia’s favour taking 6 for 44 between them after Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan plundered 63 runs in the first seven overs without loss.Ellis took career-best figures of 4 for 28 in just his third T20I, with Finch predicting he has a bright future at the international level.”He’s someone who brings an unbelievable attitude, an unbelievable work ethic to games and training,” Finch said.”His energy, his intensity, his ability to learn really quickly, whether it be with the new ball, old ball, talking to experienced players, coaches, he’s just got an amazing attitude that he brings to the table.”And he’s someone that the boys love playing with.”When he turns up, he’s just got an infectious attitude that he brings and he’s just one of [those] guys that will have a super future because he’s prepared to challenge himself each and every day, which is a great sign, especially from a guy who hasn’t had a huge amount of international experience.”Related
McDonald backs Finch to regain form heading towards T20 World Cup
Inglis kept wicket for the first time in T20I cricket having played his previous five games as a batter. He made a valuable 24 off 15 batting at No.3, which was made even more impressive by the fact that he carried the drinks throughout the Test series and then missed the entire ODI series because of a Covid-19 positive test that forced him to isolate in his hotel room.”He’s been fantastic,” Finch said of Inglis. “Nothing seems to faze him. The attitude that he brings out in the middle is brilliant. It’s good fun batting with him. He’s somebody who again takes in so much information and his ability to walk out of a hotel room after seven days of isolation and start off really well was outstanding.”And he’s just someone again, like Nathan Ellis, the guys love being around and love having him in squads. He’s a super player. He’s got so much talent as well. So yeah, I’ve been really impressed with Josh.”Aaron Finch acknowledges his half-century•AFP/Getty Images
Finch himself made a nice return to form scoring 55 off 45 balls to guide Australia home in the chase. Finch had gone 16 international innings without a half-century, including 13 T20Is, and had posted nine single-figure scores in that period culminating in back-to-back ducks to finish the recent ODI series. Coach Andrew McDonald had backed the skipper to come good 24 hours earlier and Finch repaid the faith.Finch used his feet to advance at the quicks early in his innings but then settled into a different set-up thereafter, keeping his left leg planted well outside leg stump to avoid getting trapped lbw.”It’s something that I tend to do,” Finch said. “It’s after my initial eight to 10 balls, when you start to get a bit more of a rhythm that I tend to go to that one. Especially, when guys are angling in and attacking the stumps quite a bit more on low bouncing wickets in particular.”I should have gone to it earlier, shouldn’t I.”But it’s just one of those things. I mean, you get knocked over early. Today the wicket played really nicely against the new ball. There probably wasn’t quite as much swing initially. So, yeah, slight tinkering with technique, but that’s nothing uncommon.”
José Mourinho’s well-travelled career has seen him enjoy spells in England, Italy, Spain and now Turkey. He was announced as the Fenerbahce manager in June.
Perhaps the only surprise was that Mourinho took so long to reach Turkey, especially given his antics over the years.
It hasn’t taken him long to start controversy in the country. After beating Trabzonspor in November, Mourinho went on a lengthy rant about corruption, also claiming that “nobody wants to watch the Turkish league abroad”. A solid way to make an impression indeed.
His spell with AS Roma may have seen the club win the Conference League in 2022, but aside from that, it wasn’t the most productive of spells.

9 of the best Jose Mourinho quotes
The Special One has had a way with words over the years.
ByBarney Lane Dec 2, 2024 8 Showing defensive skills at Soccer Aid Coach takes out Olly Murs at Old Trafford
Jose Mourinho
One of Mourinho’s most laughable moments came outside his professional capacity. In 2014, he was in charge of the Rest of the World side against England at Soccer Aid.
After just nine minutes, the then-Chelsea boss delivered one of the best moments in the history of the event by wiping out singer Olly Murs with a tackle from the sidelines.
It was all taken in good humour, with the manager drawing massive cheers from the crowd as he made his way back to the dugout with a huge smile.
7 Hiding in a laundry bin Mourinho evades UEFA protocol to deliver team talk
Arriving in England as a self-proclaimed “Special One”, Mourinho had plenty to prove. With a Premier League title just a few wins away, the manager displayed his shrewd side when the Blues faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
He had received a two-match ban from the previous round, which meant he was barred from appearing on the touchline at Stamford Bridge against the German giants. Not one to be told what to do, it was later revealed that Mourinho had snuck into the changing rooms in a washing basket to deliver pre-match and half-time team talks.
His assistant was wearing a hat and regularly touching his ear, indicating a hidden earpiece, obviously communicating with his boss, who was taking refuge in a local leisure centre (or so we thought):
“I went there and nobody saw me. The problem was to leave after. And Stewart Bannister the kit man put me in the basket. It was a little bit open so I could breathe.
“But when he is taking it outside the dressing room, the UEFA guys were following and desperate to find me so he closed the box and I couldn’t breathe! When he opened the box I was dying! I am serious! I was claustrophobic, I promise! It’s true!”
6 Running down the touchline at Old Trafford Last-minute goal sparks iconic celebration
Jose Mourinho
Mourinho’s spell at Porto made him one of the most sought-after bosses in Europe. The Portuguese coach led the club to a treble during his first full season, before leading them to another league title and the Champions League crown in 2003/04.
During the second leg of their Champions League clash with Manchester United that year, Porto were on the verge of going out on away goals. Costinha stepped up to score in the 89th minute to seal their passage to the last eight.
Mourinho sprinted down the touchline to celebrate with his players, giving fans packed into Old Trafford a preview of what was to come a few months later.
5 Wearing a wire at Roma Playful Jose looks to catch officials out
AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho once wore a wire during his time with Roma. In 2023, his club drew 1-1 with Monza, and during his post-match press conference, the Portuguese boss claimed he wore it to protect himself from referees.
“I’m not stupid, you know,” said Mourinho. “Today, I went to the game with a microphone. I recorded everything. From the moment I left the locker room to the moment I returned. I protected myself.”
It was a sign that Mourinho had moved into new territory as his career began to fizzle out.
4 Nearly coming to blows with Marco Ianni Chelsea coach incenses Mourinho on Stamford Bridge return
Towards the end of his spell in charge of Man Utd, the club conceded a late goal against Chelsea, having led late on.
Mourinho was naturally disappointed in the dugout, but when Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni ran down the touchline punching the air, the United boss’ demeanour changed.
He ended up chasing the Italian down the dugout before being stopped by stewards, and it was later shown that Ianni had run back and screamed in Mourinho’s direction, sparking the United boss into a frenzy.
3 "Respect, respect, respect" United boss fires back after heavy defeat
After United were defeated 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in August 2018, Mourinho delivered one of his most famous press conference moments.
When pressed on the fact many supporters left before the end, the manager said: “Do you know what the result was? Three-nil. Do you know what this means (holding up three fingers)?
“Three-nil, but it also means three Premier Leagues and I won more alone than the other 19 managers together. Three for me and two for them.”
He then left the media centre repeating “respect, respect, respect”, and it was evident that his time at United was drawing to a close.
2 Using a laptop to protest a decision Mourinho takes issue with refereeing decision
It didn’t take long for Mourinho to cause controversy in Turkey. When Fenerbahçe had a goal ruled out for offside against league rivals Antalyaspor in September 2024, Mourinho placed his laptop in front of the broadcaster’s ground camera with a still image of the decision in what was an obvious sign of protest.
Naturally, he was given a yellow card as his Machiavellian ways continued in Istanbul.
1 Poking Tito Vilanova in the eye Mourinho resorts to violence
One of Mourinho’s craziest moments came during his spell with Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.
During a Spanish Super Cup tie in the 2011/12 campaign, Mourinho poked Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye as the two sides created a scuffle following a poor tackle by Marcelo on Cesc Fabregas.
Mourinho was subsequently given a ban for his actions and later apologised, saying: “I was the one in the wrong, I shouldn’t have done what I did. Of course not, that negative image stays forever. Tito had nothing to do with it. I apologise to him.”
Out of everything Mourinho has gotten up to during his managerial career, this is perhaps the craziest.
Leeds United moved to the top of the Championship table on Tuesday night with a fantastic 3-1 win over Middlesbrough at a noisy Elland Road.
The Whites are now two points clear of Sheffield United in the division, before the Blades play on Wednesday night, and will certainly end the gameweek in the automatic promotion places.
Wilfried Gnonto, Dan James, and Brenden Aaronson scored the goals for the hosts to secure a fantastic result against Boro, who had beaten Leeds 3-0 at Elland Road in the League Cup back in August.
One of the star performers for the West Yorkshire outfit was the scorer of the second, and arguably best, goal of the night – Wales international James.
Dan James' electric performance against Middlesbrough
The rapid former Manchester United winger was selected to play on the right flank for the Whites and was involved in all three goals for Daniel Farke’s side.
James burst down the right wing and produced a teasing cross into the box that Seny Dieng in the Boro goal made a complete mess of, allowing Gnonto to tap the ball into a virtually empty net.
The 27-year-old star then scored his fourth goal of the Championship season in superb style, firing into the far top corner from the edge of the box to put Leeds 2-1 up after Max Wober’s unfortunate own goal had made it 1-1.
James played a big role in the third and final goal with his driving run on the counter-attack leading to a pass to Ao Tanaka in the box, which allowed the midfielder to square the ball to Aaronson to score.
There was another Leeds player who was just as good as the Wales international, though, and that was Joe Rothwell, who has proven himself to be Farke’s most underrated player.

Leeds' most underrated player
Rothwell has been unfortunate, in a sense, to be playing alongside an incredibly talented and popular midfielder in Tanaka, who won the club’s Player of the Month award for October and November.
Whilst the Bournemouth loanee will, surely, love to play alongside such a quality player, it does mean that the majority of the acclaim goes the way of the summer signing from Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Rothwell’s performance against Middlesbrough was a reminder, however, that he is just as important to the team with his terrific displays in the middle of the park, with LeedsLive handing him and James a player rating of 8/10 each.

As you can see in the table above, the Englishman was a midfield metronome in the middle of the park with his impressive pass success rate, whilst he was also superb out of possession.
Meanwhile, Tanaka also completed 92% of his attempted passes but lost nine of his 15 ground duels and was dribbled past three times, which shows that Rothwell offered more solidity defensively.
The Englishman tops the team for key passes (1.6) per game and ranks fifth for passes completed (39.9) per game, which speaks to his progressive use of the ball for Leeds.
Leeds could sign a "ridiculous" £5m star to be their next Archie Gray
Leeds United have been linked with an interest in the talented teenage sensation.
1 ByDan Emery Dec 9, 2024
He is key to the way the teams turns their possession into dangerous attacks with his progressive passes, as shown by his impressive number of key passes, and that – along with his showing against Boro – is why he is, arguably, the most underrated star in the team alongside his more heralded midfield partner.

O principal deles o do rebaixamento.
Taijul Islam and Khaled Ahmed make key incisions towards the end of the day

Stumps Half-centuries from Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma and Keegan Petersen kept South Africa’s scorecard ticking for most of the first day of the Gqeberha Test. But Bangladesh struck late in the day to keep the hosts at 278 for 5 at stumps, as honours were shared.Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who was brought in to replace the injured Taskin Ahmed, was the best bowler of the day with three wickets, while Khaled Ahmed picked up two. Both of them picked up one wicket each in the last few minutes of play, which should give Bangladesh a boost going into the second day.Taijul broke the crucial 83-run fourth-wicket partnership between Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton, the biggest stand of the day. He had Rickelton caught at slip by Yasir ali after the batter had gloved the ball in his attempt at a reverse-sweep. Rickelton looked distraught to miss out on his maiden Test fifty, as he fell on 42.Shortly after the new ball was taken, Khaled removed Bavuma when he edged the ball as it bounced more than expected, and Najmul Hossain Shanto completed the catch at first slip. Bavuma once again failed to build on a good start, falling for 67 – his 19th Test fifty, to go with just one century – as he was undone by a great delivery.Taijul Islam bowled tirelessly, and was rewarded with three wickets•AFP/Getty Images
Earlier, South Africa got off to another good start by hurrying to 107 for 1 at lunch after Mehidy Hasan Miraz became the first spinner in 87 years to open the bowling in the first innings in South AfricaSarel Erwee was the only wicket to fall in the first session when he was dismissed by Khaled’s awaygoing delivery in the 12th over. Erwee, who made 24, survived a close call in the third over of the morning when Khaled appealed for lbw. The umpire turned it down, and Mominul Haque was late at taking the review; replays showed red on all three counts.Elgar, meanwhile, found the boundaries with ease, pulling and driving comfortably. He reached his half-century off 66 balls, his third fifty in the Test series.South Africa started well after the lunch break, too, with Elgar and Petersen adding 82 runs for the second wicket. But the captain fell to a Taijul delivery that slid through, after the bowler had spent much of the day trying to draw him on to the front foot.A 27-minute rain break further slowed down the side’s scoring rate after that, before Petersen became Taijul’s second victim after having looked in good touch before the delay. Petersen made 64 before dancing down the track, missing the ball, and being struck on his pad. The umpire had denied the appeal as it looked to be going down leg, but replays showed that the ball would go on to hit leg stump.Bangladesh then broke the Rickelton-Bavuma partnership, which had kept South Africa going for 31 overs, to come back in the contest.
