Desmond Haynes has been appointed as West Indies men’s lead selector, replacing Roger Harper in the role.Haynes, the opening batter who scored over 15,000 international runs for West Indies, was confirmed at a meeting of CWI’s board of directors on Thursday.He has signed a contract that runs until June 2024, and his role as selector will span two T20 World Cups and a 50-over World Cup.Haynes has not been directly involved in the game in recent years, though was shortlisted as a candidate for West Indies men’s head coach in 2019 before being beaten to the role by Phil Simmons.”I would like to thank president [Ricky] Skerritt and the CWI board of directors for giving me the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket once again,” Haynes said. “Being a selector is a thankless task, but a critical role in our cricket system and I am honoured to be appointed.”I have always indicated that I would assist West Indies cricket in any way possible and I see this as an opportunity to do just that. Manchester United have been given a new lease of life and optimism after the appointment of Ruben Amorim from Portuguese side Sporting CP.

Former boss Erik ten Hag was dismissed after United’s woeful start to the new campaign, winning just four wins in all competitions up until the end of October, when the Dutchman received his marching orders.

It comes after the board once again backed the 54-year-old in the transfer market, taking the spending to over £600m since his appointment back in the summer of 2022.

He was unable to secure a consistent challenge for a top-four spot in the Premier League, finishing eighth last season – only achieving qualification for the Europa League after beating rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Their recruitment over this summer has failed to push them back in the right direction and take them to the next level in the early stages of the campaign.

Centre-back Leny Yoro had huge interest from major European clubs all throughout the summer after his impressive breakthrough season with Lille in Ligue 1.

The 19-year-old made 44 appearances in all competitions, playing a crucial role in the starting lineup despite his tender age.

However, he would move to United for a deal in the region of £52m, but picked up an ankle issue in pre-season that has restricted him from making a single competitive appearance for the Red Devils.

There still remains a huge amount of promise around the teenager despite his injury issues, especially considering he was likened to Arsenal star William Saliba by FBref for his displays last season.

When delving into their respective stats, the comparison is an understandable one, with Yoro matching or even beating Saliba, who’s been valued at around £90m by CIES Football Observatory.

The “world-class” youngster, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, achieved to same pass accuracy, but did average more tackles and interceptions per 90.

Palmer said cashing in for £17m on the forward would be “unbelievable business” for West Brom.

“West Brom going along nicely in the Championship, their player Josh Maja, who is having a fantastic season so far, [has] interest from Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad. Both looking for £17 million. West Brom signed him on a free transfer, so this would be unbelievable business for the football club, to get that type of money for him.

“I think it’s a fee that they wouldn’t be able to turn down. The idea of West Brom selling the £17,000-a-week Maja may horrify some supporters, considering what a vital member of Corberan’s team he is. The 25-year-old has matured into an excellent Championship striker and his best years should still be in front of him.

That said, the opportunity for the Baggies to receive as much as £17m for one of their most prized players could be too great to turn down, considering it would be one of the most significant financial boosts in their recent history.

BCCI president expects the tournament to be “as big and grand a success as men’s IPL”

The BCCI is at the final stages of planning for a Women’s IPL, according to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who has said he strongly believes that the tournament should take off in 2023.”We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen,” Ganguly told PTI on Friday. “I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women’s IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men’s IPL.”After India finished runners-up to England in the 2017 ODI World Cup, and then second-best to Australia at the T20 World Cup in 2020, the women’s game in the country has cornered a lot more attention than it had previously.But despite prominent voices asking for a T20 league for women in India along the lines of the WBBL or the now-defunct Kia Super League (the women’s Hundred has taken its place), the BCCI has opted not to go ahead, so far, choosing instead to only host a three-team Women’s T20 Challenge alongside the playoffs of the men’s IPL. This started in 2018 as a two-team event, with one exhibition match, and expanded to a three-team affair in 2019 and 2020, but was scrapped in 2021, even though the men’s tournament took place (in two parts because of the Covid-19 situation).The BCCI’s argument against the Women’s IPL has been that Indian cricket doesn’t possess the sort of depth in its domestic circuit that is required for the tournament to be worthwhile. In 2019, Ganguly had, in fact, suggested that a seven-team women’s IPL could well come to fruition in 2023, when he had said, “You need a lot more women players. I see that in four years’ time, to get a seven-team IPL with the best women players [in participation].”As such, there are at least 1100 registered women’s players in India in any domestic season, and around 40 players who have either played for India since the 2018-19 season or are on the fringes of selection.
