Pakistan seal thriller by 31 runs, despite Liam Livingstone's record 42-ball hundred

Babar, Rizwan add 150 for first wicket, before Shaheen Shah Afridi stars with three wickets

Liam Livingstone scored England’s fastest T20I century in vain as Pakistan won a thrilling contest by 31 runs to go 1-0 up in their three-match series at Trent Bridge.Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan guided Pakistan to their highest T20I total of 232 for 6 with a 150-run opening partnership, Pakistan’ssecond-highest for any wicket in this format. It meant England had to better their highest T20I score while chasing and Livingstone did his utmost to try and get them there, his 42-ball hundred beating Dawid Malan’s 48-ball century against New Zealand in 2019. But with his dismissal, they fell short, bowled out for 201. Livingstone struck nine sixes and six fours but, after Pakistan had reduced England to 48 for 3, their bowlers continued to take wickets at regular enough intervals to dent the hosts’ run-rate, which had been superior for significant periods. Shaheen Shah Afridi was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 30 off 3.2 overs and he was excellent in the field.Pakistan didn’t get off to a blazing start. On the contrary, by the end of the powerplay, they were 49 for 0 and it wasn’t until the 12th over that they struck their first six. They went on to score 12 in all, equalling Pakistan’s record against Bangladesh in 2007.Rizwan was still scoring at a run a ball by the end of the eighth over but the 12th over – when he and Azam each struck sixes off Matt Parkinson in the space of three balls – signalled an acceleration. Pakistan ended up scoring 152 runs of the last 10 overs, their middle order maintaining the momentum even after Azam fell for a 49-ball 85 and Rizwan for 63 from 41.Azam on a rollHis 158 had set Pakistan up to avoid being swept 3-0 in the ODI series before James Vince and Lewis Gregory trumped his effort, and Azam continued his fine form. He struck three consecutive fours off David Willey in the third over of the match, steering him through the covers before advancing down the pitch to send the ball over long-on and then flicking through midwicket with imperious timing. On the last ball of the over, he survived an England appeal for lbw and their subsequent review when he was given not out, replays showing the ball was missing leg stump.Eoin Morgan brought Livingstone on in the ninth over, but it backfired when he conceded 11 runs, including back-to-back fours to Rizwan. The 12th over, bowled by Parkinson, went for 18, Azam cracking a shot over the midwicket boundary and Rizwan going flat and hard in the same direction. Azam went over the fence at long-on twice more, off Parkinson and Gregory, amid a total of eight fours. He finally fell swinging at a wide, full delivery from Willey which Jonny Bairstow took behind the stumps. Initially given not out, England’s review was successful when UltraEdge revealed a clear spike for bat on ball.Sohaib Maqsood contributed 19 runs off seven balls, Fakhar Zaman 26 off just eight – including three sixes off Saqib Mahmood in the 18th over – and Mohammad Hafeez 24 off 10 to keep Pakistan tracking in the right direction.Catches, winning matches and all thatEngland were well ahead of the required run-rate at the end of the powerplay, having scored 20 more runs than Pakistan to that point, but wickets were the problem and some excellent fielding from the visiting side was responsible.Afridi’s gem of a return catch sent Malan packing for just 1, as he dived forward on his follow-through to grab the ball low to the ground. Imad Wasim’s take to dismiss Bairstow, also off Afridi, was straightforward in comparison, but then came Haris Rauf’s miraculous effort at cow corner to remove Moeen Ali. Having skied Mohammad Hasnain in that direction, Moeen could only watch as Rauf – and Maqsood – were lucky not to be injured as they both ran for the ball. Rauf ended up in Maqsood’s lap as he leapt with two hands and both fell to the ground, Rauf crucially holding the ball to leave England wobbling on 48 for 3.Livingstone lights it upJason Roy looked the man most likely to go big for England, racing to 32 off just 13 balls as wickets fell around him. But when Roy was out edging Shadab Khan to Azam at deep point, Livingstone stepped in. Playing just his sixth international T20, Livingstone raced to a half-century off just 17 balls, England’s fastest fifty in T20Is.His striking was immaculate and power immense as he pummelled nine sixes in all. Having seen Hasnain tip his leading edge off Rauf over the rope at third man, he then sent Rauf into the stands over deep square leg. Livingstone punished a couple of Shadab long-hops before punching him down the ground twice more. His drive into the stands at cow corner off Rauf took him to 97 off 41 and within reach of the England record. Livingstone’s almighty drive over long-on off Shadab to bring up his hundred was to be his last. He skied the very next ball in the same direction but picked out Afridi on the boundary’s edge. Needing 44 off the last three overs, the task proved too much for the England tail. With Eoin Morgan having said that England would use this series to assess fringe players ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year, Livingstone showed there is nothing “fringe” about him.

Matter of time before Real Madrid sign £110m ace with Perez ready for talks

It is reportedly considered a “matter of time” before Real Madrid sign a marquee star, with club president Florentino Perez prepared to open “serious” talks.

Real Madrid eyeing new centre-back and midfielder

The Galacticos have a quality but aging squad right now, not to mention one depleted in some key areas.

The likes of Luka Modric (39) and Toni Kroos (34) are well into their twilight years at the Bernabeu, and this has prompted reports that Perez could soon take to the transfer market in search of heirs for his midfield legends.

It is believed that Real are keeping tabs on Villarreal star Alex Baena as a possible replacement for Modric in particular, with the Spain international currently starring for his Yellow Submarine side and available for the value of his £51 million release clause.

Meanwhile, there is also the matter of bringing in a world-class central defender to shore up Carlo Ancelotti’s backline. Currently, Real have four senior options in that area – Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Eder Militao and Jesus Vallejo.

The quartet boast serious quality, but Alaba’s ACL injury and the fact Rudiger also isn’t getting any younger means that a new centre-back is needed sooner rather than later.

Real could look to the Premier League in this regard. Indeed, reports have claimed that Perez is interested in William Saliba, with suggestions even emerging this week that Real could open talks for Micky van de Ven instead of the heavily linked Cristian Romero.

Going back to midfield, Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is set to be a hot commodity next year following his excellent performances under Xabi Alonso at club level and for Germany on the international stage.

Real Madrid expected to sign Wirtz as Perez plans "serious" talks

As per reports from Spain, sources in Germany believe that it is a matter of time before Real sign Wirtz, with Perez prepared to open “serious” talks over a deal for the £110 million playmaker.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

The Whites are eager to rejuvenate their options in the middle of the park, so much so that they’re ready to pursue a move for Wirtz, who already boasts four goals in the Bundesliga and two in the Champions League over seven appearances across the competitions this season. The 21-year-old is clearly a player of dazzling ability, but it will not be an easy deal for Perez and co to orchestrate.

“Incredible. I’ve watched him three times this year now and he’s blown me away every time,” former England international Joe Cole told TNT Sports earlier this year.

“He’s got a South American flair with a German efficiency about him. We’ve all heard of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and Musiala. This lad will be new to the British viewers. Let me tell you, he is every bit as talented as those players. He could go on to be anything.”

Lasith Malinga retires from T20s to close out playing career

Malinga retires as the leading wicket-taker in T20Is

Andrew Fidel Fernando14-Sep-2021

Lasith Malinga, who has a claim to being men’s cricket’s greatest T20 bowler, has officially called time on the last format he had not retired in. It was always likely Malinga’s playing career was over after he stopped being picked for the Sri Lanka side, while he also withdrew from several franchise tournaments, including the IPL. But if fans had held out hope for a farewell T20, that is no longer an option.Malinga announced his decision via his new Youtube channel, in which he had been analysing Sri Lanka’s limited-overs performances over the past few weeks. “Today I decided I want to give 100% rest to my T20 bowling shoes,” he said. “I want to thank each and every one who supported me and blessed me throughout my T20 journey.” Malinga went on to thank the officials and teammates of all the major teams he has been a part of, from the Sri Lanka national side, to Mumbai Indians, Melbourne Stars, and various other sides from around the world.

Recognised almost as much for his blonde-tipped curls, as his unique round-arm action, Malinga claimed 107 T20 international wickets, and maintained an economy rate of 7.42 across 83 bowling innings. He was among the format’s primary innovators in its early years. Although his fast, swinging yorker was his primary weapon right through his T20 career, he also developed a well-disguised slower-ball, a slower bouncer, and was among the first and most successful bowlers to use wide yorkers at the death – a fairly commonplace strategy today. He was an integral part of the Sri Lanka men’s team’s T20 success at the turn of the last decade. Malinga was leader of Sri Lanka’s attack in the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups, when Sri Lanka made the final, and was captain of the team when they won the World Cup in 2014.In addition to his international exploits, he was also a highly-sought after bowler in franchise tournaments in his heyday. In the IPL, his tally of 170 wickets is yet to be eclipsed, and his strike rate of 16.62 is the lowest for any bowler with more than 90 wickets in the tournament. The IPL has arguably never seen a more consistent death bowler.Although he didn’t pick up hard-ball cricket until relatively late in his teens, Malinga was discovered by Sri Lanka fast bowling coaches Anusha Samaranayake and Champaka Ramanayaka, who brought him into the domestic system and trained him in his early years. He made his international debut in 2004, and soon became a fixture in all Sri Lanka’s teams. Repeated knee and ankle injuries threatened to end his career however, and in 2010, he made the decision to retire from Tests to focus on limited-overs cricket.Malinga last played an international in March 2020. He has retired at 38.

Man Utd line up Ten Hag replacement who could be their own Klopp

The international break has come at a great time for Manchester United. Respite, urgent respite. How Erik ten Hag’s side have needed it over the last week or so.

United actually bounced into the break off the back of a promising 0-0 draw at Aston Villa. Still, chaos remains. Big-money players are being dropped, players are injured and Ten Hag’s job has never been less secure.

The Old Trafford hierarchy backed the Dutchman over the summer, perhaps strangely, and they are now paying the price for such a decision.

The Red Devils have embarked on their worst start to a Premier League season after seven matches and have just scored five goals, a tally only worse than relegation-threatened Southampton.

So, where do United turn to? Getting rid of Ten Hag could cost a bomb but there are plenty of managers out there.

Man United's manager shortlist

Thomas Tuchel has long looked like one of the main candidates for the job but reports emerged over the weekend suggesting he was now in advanced talks with the FA over taking the England job following Lee Carsley’s interim spell at the helm.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

Gareth Southgate has also seemingly ruled himself out of any new gig with the former Three Lions boss claiming he doesn’t intend to manage again over the next year.

One option is Sporting manager Ruben Amorim. Compared to Jose Mourinho, it would be an attractive appointment but having turned down West Ham over the summer, you sense he has unfinished business in the Portuguese capital.

Another option is Edin Terzic. That’s according to The Sun who reported on Saturday evening that the former Borussia Dortmund head coach is being ‘considered’ by the decision-makers at Man United.

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic

Terzic is currently without a club having surprisingly quit after Dortmund’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid and thus, no compensation fee would be required. So, would he be a good appointment? Compared to Jurgen Klopp, it’s certainly a good start.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

How Terzic compares to Ten Hag and Klopp

By the time Klopp left Anfield behind at the end of last season, United supporters would have been sick of the sight of the German.

He was the pillar of Liverpool’s success over the last decade in which they won the Premier League, the Champions League, an FA Cup and League Cup. Ten Hag may well have won two domestic trophies since moving to Old Trafford but Klopp’s dynasty is immense in comparison.

So, how does Terzic compare? Well, it goes just beyond the fact they’ve had success with Dortmund, something David James previously alluded to when discussing Liverpool’s manager targets last season.

The main parallel between the two can be outlined with the help of commentator Derek Rae. Writing for ESPN he spoke of Terzic possessing ‘a Klopp-like intensity in the dugout’. Promising signs indeed if you like that sort of thing.

Just based on that, you can gather a sense that the 41-year-old would bring a greater aura and personality to the side of the pitch than Ten Hag, a manager who doesn’t show his emotions too regularly.

Stylistically, further similarities can be drawn between the great Klopp and Terzic. The German tactician also prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation – something Klopp used to great effect at Liverpool – and likes high-pressing.

As the Bundesliga official website once outlined ‘Terzic football means ambush’. That requires the team to press from the front and at high intensity, forcing the defenders to make a mistake, just as a Klopp side would do.

United have tried pressing under Ten Hag but, truth be told, it’s been a collective mess. Unlike when you watch a side like Arsenal or Manchester City, it’s hard to know who’s leading the press and it’s unpredictable.

At times the wingers might push up with the striker but things are rarely done in unison. This has led to countless mistakes and also the midfield being played through on an all too regular basis. There is a hope, therefore, that Terzic could solve that problem.

What should also appeal to the hierarchy at United is the young coach’s experience at a big club. Ten Hag had this having managed Ajax but he has not dealt with the expectations or pressure well since moving to England.

Terzic looks like a man capable of embracing this. One particular passage from his chat with the Coaches’ Voice helps paint that picture.

Wow, doesn’t that sound a fair bit different from Ten Hag? He’s found it a massive challenge to control the emotional state of this football club. He’s had problems with Marcus Rashford’s discipline and simply, all of the noise surrounding the manager’s future suggests he has no control over proceedings at Old Trafford.

Terzic certainly isn’t of the calibre of a Zinedine Zidane or Tuchel but he’s an ever-improving manager and his Klopp-like style could be just the tonic United need.

Arsenal internally debating deal for "exciting" ace who Arteta’s identified

Arsenal chiefs are deliberating whether to make a move for one in-form star after his incredible start to the season, after he was personally identified by manager Mikel Arteta as a transfer target for 2025.

Arsenal looking at signing new striker next year

The fine form of Kai Havertz hasn’t stopped sporting director Edu Gaspar and the recruitment team from looking at new striking options for next year, despite eventually deciding not to sign one in the summer window.

Arteta loves £161k-per-week Barcelona star as Arsenal look at possible move

The Spaniard is a big fan.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 24, 2024

The Gunners made a very well-documented attempt to prise away Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, making a proposal for the player alongside both Chelsea and Man United, but the 21-year-old rejected all of their offers to remain in the Bundesliga.

Amid concerns surrounding Gabriel Jesus, it is believed Edu and Arteta could look to rectify their decision not to sign a new number nine. Jesus is set for internal talks with Arsenal over his future, according to some reports, and if the £265,000-per-week forward does opt to part company, then Arteta will definitely need another striker.

“Gabriel Jesus is clearly struggling for confidence right now. You can see that by the way he’s playing. He’s thinking about things too much and taking too many touches when he’s in possession,” said reliable Arsenal journalist Charles Watts to CaughtOffside earlier this month.

“When Jesus is at his best he does things off the cuff. He creates chaos with his movement and his work rate. But right now he’s bringing more confusion than chaos with his play.

“I think there’s certainly a chance this could be his final season at the club.”

Spanish media sources claim Arsenal are prepared to battle Barcelona for Jhon Duran, with the Colombian enjoying a fine start to this season after being widely tipped to leave Aston Villa in the summer window.

Meanwhile, another player who’s regularly mentioned as a potential target is Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal internally debating Viktor Gyokeres move

Some reports claim Arsenal have held talks with Gyokeres’ representatives ahead of January, with GiveMeSport sharing an update on their pursuit.

The outlet writes that Arsenal are internally debating a move for Gyokeres, and the Swede is “being eyed” by Arteta personally. The Gunners boss and Edu are working closely together and identifying targets for next year, and Gyokeres is a player who features highly in their thinking.

Indeed, it is also believed that scouts will be in attendance to run the rule over him during Sporting’s clash with Man City in the Champions League on November 5. Called a potentially “exciting signing” for interested clubs by pundit John Wenham, the former Coventry City ace has picked up right where he left off from last season – boasting 13 goals in 13 appearances across all competitions so far.
