As bad as Souttar: Clement must bin 2/10 Rangers man after Kyiv no-show

Glasgow Rangers gave themselves something to play for at Hampden Park next week with a 1-1 draw away at Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday night.

The Light Blues picked up a draw in dramatic fashion as Cyriel Dessers popped up in the 94th minute to bundle the ball into the back of the net from Vaclav Cerny's brilliant inswinging cross.

Philippe Clement's side looked set for a disappointing defeat prior to the Nigerian striker's close-range finish, as they had plenty of the ball but had failed to make the most of it for the first 93 minutes.

One thing the Belgian boss should have learned from the game is that it is finally time to bin Scott Wright from the squad, as the winger put in a performance as bad as defender John Souttar.

Scott Wright and John Souttar's struggles in Kyiv

Despite his no-show against Hearts on Saturday, with zero goals and zero chances created, the former Aberdeen man was selected to start from the left side after an injury to Oscar Cortes at the weekend.

Unfortunately, Clement's faith in the Scottish flop was not rewarded with a strong display on the pitch as the manager opted to withdraw him at half-time, after 45 minutes of loose touches and no impact at the top end of the pitch.

Glasgow World journalist Lewis Anderson awarded the winger a match rating of 2/10 for his showing and claimed that he did "nothing of note" in the first half.

Rangers winger Scott Wright.

The other player Anderson handed a 2/10 rating to was Souttar, who played the full 90 minutes at centre-back, due to his loose passing and error for the Kyiv goal. The Scotland international was caught napping in the box as Andriy Yarmalenko ghosted behind him for a tap-in from close range.

Why Clement must bin Wright

Clement must now finally bin Wright from the club after yet another no-show on the pitch for Rangers, amid reported interest from Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

It was not a surprise to see the Scottish forward struggle in a Champions League evironment when you consider his struggles in the Scottish Premiership in recent seasons for the Ibrox giants.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old – who should be in the prime years of his career – has contributed with just three goals and assists combined in 46 games, which means that he has had more than his fair share of no-shows in a Gers shirt.

This shows that the former Aberdeen man simply cannot be relied upon to provide quality in the final third on a regular basis, which was further evidenced by his poor display against Kyiv.

Cerny provided a glimpse into the quality he could provide the club, with a brilliant assist for Dessers' goal, and Rangers should be looking to bring in more players like him, whilst moving on Wright – due to his consistent struggles on the pitch.

Rangers could ditch Dessers in swoop for £3m star who 'wants the move'

The Scottish giants have been linked with a transfer for the centre-forward this summer.

Pujara: I love batting with Rishabh Pant

India’s No. 3 backs the wicketkeeper batsman to keep playing his natural attacking game

Varun Shetty07-Feb-20212:46

Gambhir: Would never want Pant to change

Cheteshwar Pujara is enjoying his budding new partnership with Rishabh Pant. The two batsmen have made timely interventions for India in three consecutive Tests so far, the latest coming on day three of the Chennai Test. Pant joined Pujara when the hosts fell to 73 for 4, 505 behind England, and put up a 119-run stand powered by Pant’s decisive six-hitting against Jack Leach.Pujara said batting alongside Pant almost makes batting easier. “It does. When a batter is going after the bowlers from one end and I’m around, I can always have a chat. There’s a good left and right combination which also frustrates the bowlers.”[…] the way Rishabh bats, especially against spinners, I think he likes to take them on and that’s the way he will go about it. It’s been a crucial partnership for us and I hope it continues, I love batting with him. And if I can be of any help and I can just speak to him – what are the shots he can play and what to avoid at times. I’m really happy overall with the way he’s playing. He still has to learn a few more things – he still has to put the team in a commanding position because he is capable of that and he’s missing out on hundreds. I’m sure that he will learn from this. It’s good that he’s in form,” Pujara said.Their 119-run stand came off just 145 balls as Pant took a liking to Leach, who had gone for 59 off six overs at one point. Pujara also benefited from this assault, picking some boundaries up himself as India kept a decent scoring rate through their innings. That was until an attempted pull from Pujara off a Dom Bess half-tracker ricocheted to midwicket off Ollie Pope’s shoulder at short leg.On the day, it was one of four wickets that India lost playing an attacking shot, but Pujara said there wasn’t really a plan to be aggressive.’It’s been a crucial partnership for us and I hope it continues’ – Pujara on him and Pant batting together•BCCI

“It wasn’t part of the game plan. […] when we’re playing in India, the scoring rate is always on the higher side. And we were getting loose balls. And Rishabh always bats the way he bats. He likes to take the bowlers on. So he just wanted to bat in a natural way, which is fair I think. That’s his game and that’s the way he should play.”I think we could have still batted a bit better. There were some soft dismissals which didn’t go in our favour, like the way I got out, the way Jinks [Ajinkya Rahane] got out. I felt that those wickets were crucial for us. At the same time, we are still very confident because Ash [R Ashwin] and Washington [Sundar] are batting really well. We’ll just have to move on from here and tomorrow I think will be the most crucial day for us.”India finished the day on 257 for 6, still 122 away from avoiding the follow-on. But in Pujara’s view, this is still a good batting surface, albeit one that has begun to take some turn. He said India had expected a little more assistance for their bowlers on the first two days, but have moved on from that and believe they are still very much alive in the Test match.”When we spoke before this series started – what happened in Australia, whether we were able to achieve our goals as a batting unit – we felt we were able to achieve our goals. And same thing applies here,” Pujara said as part of a response to a question about how Bess’ bowling compared to Ashwin’s. “This is the first innings which has just started, and we are still in a decent position. I would still say the way Ashwin and Washi are batting, we can put up a decent total. So we want to achieve our goals as a batting unit rather than focusing on what the opposition is doing.”

Bid made: West Brom move to sign new midfielder who’s spoken to Corberan

West Bromwich Albion have made contact with Juventus in a bid to sign a Belgium Under-20 international, according to a new report.

The Baggies got their Championship campaign up and running on Saturday, and they got off to a perfect start as they claimed all three points against Queens Park Rangers. However, the club suffered a cup upset on Tuesday evening as the Midlands side bowed out of the EFL Cup, suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to League Two side Fleetwood Town.

The cup wouldn’t have been a priority for Carlos Corberan and his side, but it will be disappointing to go out so soon. The focus can now be on the league and what remains of this transfer window, as the club look to add to their new arrivals.

West Brom can finally replace Thomas-Asante in swoop for PL "handful"

West Bromwich Albion would welcome this new striker in through the door with open arms.

West Brom reached the Championship play-offs last season but fell short when they came up against eventual winners Southampton. The aim will be to improve on last season and go a step further. That is why Corberan will have been keen for the club to be active in the transfer market.

So far, the Baggies have brought in seven new faces over the course of the summer, with the majority of the additions being free transfers, as well as two loan deals and the addition of Torbjorn Heggem, who cost the club a transfer fee.

West Brom’s transfer business so far has seen them add players such as Joe Wildsmith, Paddy McNair, Ousmane Diakite, and Devante Cole. Their latest additions are Gianluca Frabotta, who has joined on a free transfer, and forward Lewis Dobbin, who has arrived on a loan deal.

Aston Villa have sent Dobbin to The Hawthorns in a bid for the striker to get valuable first-team minutes, and Dobbin himself sees this as the perfect opportunity. He told the club’s official website: “It’s the perfect opportunity to get first-team minutes and show what I can do. I’ve heard a lot about the Championship, and I know it’s a tough, competitive league. I’m ready for it, though. I really want to show what I’m about."

But it appears as though the club is not stopping their transfer business there, as they eye a deal for a midfielder.

West Brom make contact with Juventus over signing Joseph Nonge Boende

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, West Brom are now in direct contact with Serie A giants Juventus over a deal for Joseph Nonge Boende. The Baggies have sent their first offer for the midfielder, which is a straight loan until the end of the season, with no option to buy.

Furthermore, the 19-year-old is said to have already spoken with Corberan and is keen on the move to the Midlands. Tavolieri goes on to add that personal terms for this deal shouldn’t be a problem.

The Belgian has been with Juventus since 2021 when he joined the club’s academy from Anderlecht. He has spent most of his time in the club’s academy set-up, but he did feature twice in Juventus’ first team last season.

Danushka Gunathilaka: Kieron Pollard 'apologised' for obstructing-the-field appeal

Danushka Gunathilaka has said Kieron Pollard apologised to him for his controversial obstructing-the-field appeal during the first ODI in Antigua. The incident occurred in the 22nd over of Sri Lanka’s innings, when Gunathilaka, batting on 55, played the ball down into the pitch and ran a few steps out of his crease before deciding against the single when he saw the bowler, Pollard, haring towards the ball in a run-out attempt. In his effort to regain his crease, however, Gunathilaka trod on the ball and deflected it away from Pollard, leading to a furious appeal. It wasn’t clear from replays whether Gunathilaka had deliberately foiled a run-out attempt, but TV umpire Nigel Duguid ruled in the bowling team’s favour. The incident drew strong reactions on social media.

Gunathilaka said Pollard came up to him after West Indies’ win to have a chat about the incident.”He apologised, he told me he didn’t see that properly at that time and only after he saw the video he realised I didn’t do anything,” Gunathilaka was quoted as saying by .Sri Lanka, who lost the T20I series against the hosts, will play the second of the three ODIs on Friday and the third on March 14, following which they are scheduled to play two Tests in Antigua.

Brathwaite's unbeaten 99 headlines even first day between West Indies and Sri Lanka

Every SL bowler took a wicket, with Lakmal leading the way with three

Stumps West Indies 287 for 7 (Brathwaite 99*, Mayers 49, Cornwall 43*, Lakmal 3-71) vs Sri LankaKraigg Brathwaite saw out an outstanding Suranga Lakmal spell in the morning, watched top-order colleagues play more adventurous innings, and struck up productive late partnerships with the lower-middle order men, as he provided the backbone to West Indies innings on day one, making 99 not out of 239 balls.West Indies were 15 for 2 inside the first half-hour after John Campbell and Nkrumah Bonner succumbed to Lakmal, then later, were 120 for 4, and 222 for 7, often in danger of failing to make 300 on a track that held no serious terrors. But through each of these mini-crises, Brathwaite found partners who helped dig West Indies out of their rut, usually with much more aggression than Brathwaite himself mustered. He posted a 71-run stand with Kyle Mayers, who hit a chancy 49. He was involved in a 51-run partnership with Jason Holder, who made a quick 30. Then, late in the day, Rahkeem Cornwall joined Brathwaite for what became the as-yet-unbeaten 65-run association that propelled West Indies toward 300. Cornwall even helped Brathwaite see out six overs of the second new ball, as Cornwall struck 43 not out off 54 balls, surviving a very close lbw appeal – and subsequent review – off the last ball of the day. West Indies went to stumps at a respectable 287 for 7.Sri Lanka may have hoped to have West Indies bowled out by stumps, having put them in to bat. But perhaps, given the nature of the surface, they won’t be particularly disheartened either. Provided they take the remaining West Indies wickets early on day two, they may be afforded good batting conditions as well, with the track taking negligible spin so far. Right through day one, Lakmal seemed the likeliest of Sri Lanka’s bowlers to deliver wickets, and with no surprise, he returned with 3 for 71, while his bowling compatriots – Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Lasith Embuldeniya and Dhananjaya de Silva – only took one apiece. From the first over, Brathwaite had the look of a batsman who wanted to last the day. It was only on the 18th delivery that he scored his first runs, and once he had a taste for straight boundaries, he made sure to punish them when he could. His favoured scoring area, however, was through midwicket, particularly against the left-arm spin of Embuldeniya. He hit 11 fours through the day.Brathwaite was a recipient of Sri Lanka’s fielding largesse, however, as the visitors dropped three clear-cut chances. The Brathwaite chance – on 37 and playing a rare loose drive against Vishwa – was perhaps the most difficult of the three as Oshada Fernando at third slip leapt to his left and could not quite clinch it.Earlier, a chance had gone down off Lakmal, who had Mayers edging to third slip on 12, only for a diving Pathum Nissanka to fail while grasping at it. Lasith Embuldeniya also dropped Alzarri Joseph – again off Vishwa – at fine leg, but made quick amends by dismissing Joseph lbw the next over.Mayers and Cornwall played West Indies’ other consequential innings in similar fashion, though strangely Cornwall’s was the higher-quality innings. Mayers’ 49 off 61 was full of edges: through the cordon, short of the cordon, past his own stumps. He survived the first session, but barely, and was out in the first over of the afternoon.Cornwall, meanwhile, had time to settle in against the much older ball. Although he was tested by reverse swing, he kept out the balls that were headed to his stumps, and punished those that were in his arc, crashing Embuldeniya through cover to collect the first of his six fours, then later hitting boundaries through midwicket, point, and back down the ground, as the mood struck. When Chameera attempted to bounce him with the old ball, Cornwall hooked him for six.Sri Lanka’s bowlers might reflect that they were over-reliant on Lakmal for breakthroughs on day one, but Lakmal bowled an exemplary spell first up to set the visitors on their way. He set Campbell up with a series of inswingers then had him nick off to a ball that held its line before Bonner played on to his own stumps the over after. At this stage of the day, Lakmal was yet to concede a run. His third wicket – that of Blackwood who was also caught behind – came in his third wicket maiden of the innings.Although the quicks performed creditably, Embuldeniya had an off day. In the morning session he tried hard to get a wicket and was swiftly put away when he erred. But even later in the day, with the pitch not offering much in the way of assistance, Embuldeniya failed to settle into a rhythm and was penalized on five occasions by the third umpire for overstepping his mark as he finished with 1 for 79 from his 21 overs.
