Five full-back signings to kick off the Guardiola era at Man City

They may not receive the largest headlines or the biggest pay cheques, but full-backs have become arguably the most important players on the pitch over the last few decades.

It’s one of the few positions where you actually get time on the ball in attacking areas and the mentality of the full-backs tends to correspond to the mentality of the team; whether they’re pushing up to support the attack, sitting deep to protect their centre-halves or balancing their duties somewhere in between.

Similarly, full-backs in the modern game – and particularly since Barcelona’s four years of unparalleled dominance under Pep Guardiola – now operate almost as the wide men, providing width in attack to let the wingers tuck in and get closer to the goal.

Unfortunately for Guardiola, however, the Manchester City squad he’s about to inherit from Manuel Pellegrini isn’t exactly overflowing with top-class full-backs. Pablo Zabaleta appears a little beyond his best, Bacary Sagna is decent if unspectacular and Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy just haven’t been up to task this season. Rather tellingly, they’re now all aged 30 or over.

So with that in mind and energetic full-backs a particularly important part of the Guardiola philosophy, we at Football Fancast have been running the rule over five more youthful replacements to City’s ageing clan. Which of these full-backs would be the ideal signing to kick off the Guardiola era at the Etihad?

DAVID ALABA

David Alaba has already been linked with a summer move to Manchester City and the Bayern Munich defender would be a fantastic swoop for Guardiola’s first transfer window.

Indeed, the 23-year-old is already up there with the best left-backs in world football – in fact, many would claim he’s at the top of the pile – but his qualities are by no means restricted to the no.3 position.

He’s featured regularly at centre-back, left midfield, left wing-back and central midfield throughout his career, filling the latter position frequently during his 42 outings for the Austrian national team, and is one of the most well-rounded footballers in the game today.

Guardiola loves his multi-purpose players and is clearly a big fan of Alaba, issuing the versatile starlet 103 appearances during three campaigns at the Allianz Arena helm.

The tabloids rate the Vienna-born utility man at around £40million and with two years remaining on his contract, the summer represents City’s best chance of convincing Bayern to sell.

HECTOR BELLERIN

Arsenal players have a knack of jumping ship to Manchester City and I’m sure supporters of the latter club will be hoping young right-back Hector Bellerin is prepared to follow that trend.

The rip-roaring performances of Dani Alves were crucial to Pep Guardiola’s successes at Barcelona and the Gunners starlet is a similar kind of mould, as a converted winger blessed with incredible speed, technical quality and a willingness to contribute going forward.

Indeed, he’s emerged as one of the most exciting full-backs in world football since becoming an Arsenal regular last season, providing penetrative pace on the overlap and cover for the notoriously slow Per Mertesacker, and is still just 20 years of age.

I feel Guardiola can get even more out of the Spain U21 who, as a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, will surely be desperate to work with the former Nou Camp boss.

Of course, whether Arsenal would be open to selling remains the ultimate question mark. Bellerin’s contract doesn’t expire until 2019 and they’ll be desperate to keep hold of one of their most exciting young players.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Few full-backs in Europe have matched Ricardo Rodriguez’ potent output over the last few seasons, notching up 13 goals and 20 assists in his last 100 Bundesliga outings for Wolfsburg.

His dead-ball mastery is a predominant source but the Switzerland international’s impact on open play should not be overlooked, averaging 1.9 created chances, 1.9 tackles and 1.9 interceptions per match this season.

The 23-year-old isn’t the quickest compared to some of the other names on this list but his technical quality certainly fits into the Guardiola philosophy – he’s almost the Bundesliga’s answer to Everton and England star Leighton Baines.

After four solid seasons at the Volkswagen Arena, the timing feels right for the 33-cap international to move on. Plenty of top European clubs are interested but under contract until 2019, Wolfsburg are in a strong position to command a hefty fee.

Rodriguez could realistically set the Citizens back around £30million.

ALESSANDRO FLORENZI

A similar mould to David Alaba, albeit on the opposite side of the pitch. Indeed, Alessandro Florenzi has featured as a central midfielder and a winger throughout his Roma career but produced arguably his best form since becoming their resident No.2 last season.

The Italy international’s technical quality is evident enough through his Puskas award nomination last year – even making it onto the three-man final shortlist – for his unforgettable long-range strike against Barcelona.

He also reads the game incredibly well going forward – almost like a midfield playmaker – but the 24-year-old’s industry, energy and tenacity equally stand out and is making him a real fan favourite at the Stadio Olympico. He even wore the captain’s armband against Real Madrid last night.

A number of major clubs are already looking at the versatile Italian, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona. But Rome-born and a product of the Giallorossi academy, many expect him to follow the paths of Daniele De Rossi and Francesco Totti by rejecting interest to become a one-club man.

SERGE AURIER

He may be one of the most unpopular players in Europe at the minute, having made derogatory remarks about Laurent Blanc and some of his PSG team mates on camera, but Serge Aurier was enjoying incredible form before the scandal broke last weekend.

Indeed, he’s averaged 3.9 tackles, 3.6 interceptions, 1 shot and 1.2 successful dribbles per match in Ligue 1 this term and produced similar statistics in the Champions League – where he’s also found one goal and one assist from just three outings.

Admittedly, the Ivory Coast international isn’t much of a technician compared to the other names on this list and therefore, probably the least suited to the Guardiola philosophy.

But he’s a phenomenal athlete, a smart and incredibly versatile defender, who has featured as a full-back, a wing-back – on both sides of the pitch – and a centre-half throughout his career.

Aurier represents a more balanced option that could take Guardiola’s fancy and the aforementioned scandal could well force PSG to sell in the summer. He’s currently suspended indefinitely.

Which striker should they sign? The 10 front-men on West Ham’s transfer hit list

On course to record their highest-ever final standing of the Premier League era and about to embark on a historic move to the Olympic Stadium, the coming transfer window looks set to be an incredibly exciting one for sixth-placed West Ham.

Indeed, the move to a new ground and the Premier League’s new television deal, which could see collective revenue rise to a staggering £8billion, not to mention the potential incentive of Champions League football, should allow the Hammers access to a higher bracket of the transfer market.

And West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has made no secret of where the east London club’s priorities will lie this summer – acquiring a new centre-forward.

Indeed, despite the Hammers’ impressive rise under Slaven Bilic this season, midfielder Dimitri Payet is currently their top scorer in the Premier League with nine goals. Strikers Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia and Emmanuel Emenike, meanwhile, have netted just 12times between them.

Sullivan told talkSPORT last month; “We have a list of about ten strikers all over Europe, and most of our money will go into signing a striker. That is the plan for next season. There are a number of top Premier League players we may be bidding for, top goalscorers, but I can’t name them. I can’t comment on players from other teams.”

This begs two obvious questions; firstly: who is on West Ham’s 10-man transfer hit list and secondly: which of the ten should they attempt to sign during the summer window? Hoping to shed some light on the Irons’ transfer plans, we’ve combined recent reports to reveal the strikers believed to be on the club’s radar…

WILFRIED BONY

Wilfried Bony is a forgotten man at Manchester City, finding just ten goals across all competitions during his 15-month Etihad stint, but he thoroughly excelled at former club Swansea, combining power, technique and style to bag 25 goals in 54 Premier League outings.

The Ivory Coast international still has plenty of years ahead of him at the age of 27 and comes with proven pedigree in the top flight. Furthermore, a move during the summer transfer window seems largely inevitable and most sources have valued the 6 foot frontman at a reasonable £15million.

Source: The Guardian

AYOZE PEREZ

Ayoze Perez may not be the most potent of goal scorers, bagging just 13 since arriving in the Premier League at the start of last season, but the Spaniard has demonstrated his enormous potential on countless occasions and would likely be amassing far more impressive hauls playing in a side who aren’t constantly scrapping it out at the foot of the table.

Indeed, the 22-year-old offers nomadic movement, technical flair and two incredibly quick feet that have attracted interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past. He’s more support striker than a line-leading centre-forward but if relegation forces Newcastle United to sell on the cheap, West Ham would be wise to swoop regardless. A £10million fee is certainly in the right ballpark.

Source: Brentwood Gazette

Odion Ighalo

Odion Ighalo fired Watford to the top flight last season with 20 Championship strikes and has continued to impress in the Premier League, netting 14 times in the league as well as the opener against Arsenal in last month’s FA Cup quarter-final win.

The Nigerian international is far more poacher than target man, famed for his predatory instincts over physical prowess, and rumour has it the Hornets are already preparing to sell during the summer with Isaac Success lined up as his replacement.

But the £15million-rated striker’s dip in form during the second half of the season, failing to find the net in the Premier League since January, is a noteworthy concern.

Source: The Sun

MICHY BATSHUAYI

Michy Batshuayi is high on West Ham’s transfer hit list, with some sources even dubbing him their ‘priority target’, and it’s not hard to see why. The prodigious forward simply hasn’t looked back since making his debut for Standard Leige in 2011, going on to claim 62 goals in 154 league appearances for the Belgian outfit and current employers Marseille.

That includes a scintillating haul of 14 goals and nine assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances this season, for a Marseille side languishing in mid-table, and the Belgium international’s mix of power, speed and aerial ability suggests he’d thrive in the overtly physical Premier League.

But interest in the 22-year-old is high ahead of the summer transfer window, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs amongst the clubs currently linked with Batshuayi – who is expected to cost between £15million and £25million.

Source: The Telegraph and Evening Standard

THEO WALCOTT

Theo Walcott has spent much of his Arsenal career battling Arsene Wenger to become out-and-out centre-forward and that’s the chance Slaven Bilic is reportedly willing to offer the England speedster at West Ham.

The 27-year-old’s career return of 85 goals in 337 appearances, including nine strikes this season, may not be so inspiring and in truth, the winger-forward has rarely capitalised on the occasional opportunities in which he’s been deployed up front.

But Walcott’s penetrative pace can be devastating if used correctly and his finishing has steadily improved over the years. If Bilic can form the right attacking dynamics to create space for the 43-cap international behind opposing defences, he could consistently reach double figures in the scoring charts.

Source: Brentwood Gazette

ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE

An incredible haul of 31 goals across all competitions saw Alexandre Lacazette claim Ligue 1’s Player of the Year award last season and although he’s not quite rekindled that form during the current campaign, notching up 16 strikes in 28 league outings, the France international remains in the transfer thoughts of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The French assassin can operate wide or centrally, is laden with natural athleticism and may still be a few years away from his footballing peak at the age of 24, so swooping in the summer could save West Ham a small fortune compared to Lacazette’s potential worth in two or three seasons’ time.

Even so, and although a Lyon exit is likely this summer, widespread interest in Lacazette will allow the Ligue 1 club to charge upwards of £25million – especially considering his contract doesn’t expire until 2019.

Source: The Telegraph

EDIN DZEKO

Somewhat of a dark horse in the race to become West Ham’s star striker, speculative reports have linked the East London club with former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, who has recorded a decent if unspectacular eight goals and five assists in 20 Serie A stars since moving to Roma last summer.

Indeed, it’s not quite worked out for the Bosnian international in Italy and he’s now slightly beyond his footballing peak at the age of 30. But the 6 foot 4 target man offers proven pedigree in the Premier League, helping fire City to two league titles with a return of 72 goals in 189 appearances.

Dzeko’s a decent choice if Slaven Bilic wants to implement a more direct style of football next season and Roma might be tempted to sell following an underwhelming debut campaign. The Stadio Olimpico outfit bought him for €15million last summer.

Source: Brentwood Gazette

SAIDO BERAHINO

West Ham are one of the clubs in the mix to sign West Brom’s stroppy striker Saido Berahino and if the East London club can match the youngster’s almighty ambitions, he could prove to be a very wise long-term investment.

Indeed, the 22-year-old has found just three Premier League goals this season, amid a campaign thwarted by behind-the-scenes bust-ups at the Hawthorns, but he netted an impressive 14 times last term – regularly demonstrating prodigious finishing ability, direct dribbling and fluid movement around the final third.

The Baggies are finally set to sell in the coming transfer window – following the Tottenham Hotspur debacle last summer – but still value their prized asset at around £20million, which is rather steep considering his contract expires at the end of next season.

Source: Mirror Football

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE

It simply hasn’t worked out for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, deemed a poor fit for the club’s high-pressing philosophy by gegenpressing enthusiast Jurgen Klopp. But it wasn’t long ago the beastly Belgian was arguably the most formidable target man in the Premier League, amassing 49 goals across three campaigns with an incredibly poor Aston Villa side.

Benteke possesses all the requisites to continue scoring consistently in the Premier League, blending an enormous leap with power, pace and two decent feet, and at 25 years of age still has plenty of time to resurrect his stuttering career.

Klopp’s complete contempt towards the 24-cap international will give West Ham the upper hand around the negotiating table. But Liverpool still want around £25million for their strike flop and if Benteke’s struggles at Anfield have proved anything, it’s that he’s only compatible with certain styles of play.

Source: The Times and The Telegraph

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC

Many have dubbed it as simply tabloid rumour mongering but with the new television deal coming into effect, West Ham challenging for a Champions League spot and about to embark upon a move to the Olympic Stadium, it feels as if nothing is truly impossible for the East London club at the moment.

That includes a swoop for arguably the greatest striker of his generation in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has just fired PSG to a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title through an incredible haul of 144 goals in 170 appearances, following equally affluent spells with Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona and AC Milan.

The 34-year-old’s Parc de Princes contract expires this summer and the majority of speculation has suggested he’ll move to the Premier League on a free transfer, with West Ham the rank outsiders for his signature.

No transfer fee will allow the Hammers to spend more on wages, but the enigmatic Swede is reportedly demanding £600k per week – an unaffordable sum for most clubs throughout world football.

Five reasons Man United’s season has actually been a success

If you ask any Manchester United fan how they think their season has gone this year, you’d find it difficult to locate many who have positive things to say.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League means Louis van Gaal’s side have missed out on a place in the Champions League, but with the FA Cup final fast approaching, there is still a chance for the Red Devils to bring home some silverware.

Whether this is enough to please the supporters of one of the biggest clubs in the world is yet to be seen, but here at FootballFanCast, we believe there are actually some positives for the Man United faithful to take away from this season.

So here’s our FIVE reasons why Manchester United’s season has actually been a success…

The emergence of youth

A pretty easy one, this. One massive, massive positive United fans should be taking away from this season is the emergence of some pretty special youngsters.

They’ve all been thrown in at the deep end and have managed well, with young striker Marcus Rashford taking plenty of the plaudits. But special mentions should go to Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Timothy Fosu-Mensah too – they’ve been excellent when called upon.

Anthony Martial debut campaign

Again, it’s easy to see why Martial makes it into our list. The 20-year-old has been awesome at times this campaign, especially coming to the end of the season. 17 goals in 48 appearances is impressive, and when you bear in mind this is his first Premier League campaign, that feat is all the more impressive.

Jose still being linked with Old Trafford

He’s the man on the lips of most fans at Old Trafford, whether you love him or hate him. The media interest linking Jose with a return to England just won’t go away and supporters are seemingly rallying in order to bring him to the club. The Van Gaal appointment hasn’t worked out that well at all, and he’s becoming increasingly unpopular at the helm. Don’t give up United fans, Jose is still a free man.

Ryan Giggs in the assistant manager’s position

This is one man whom many United fans rarely disagree about. Whether Giggs is offered the job or not, him being at Old Trafford is only a good thing. He’s been a part of the United fabric for over 25 years now and no-one knows the club better than him. If there is one man that can get the Red Devils ticking again, it’s Giggsy – even from off the pitch. Another season of coaching at the top level has only served to give him more experience.

[ad_pod id=’man-united-players’ align=’center’]

David De Gea has shone

How good has De Gea been again this season? Absolutely fantastic, is the answer! But, how many more seasons will United be able to hang onto their prized shot-stopper? I’m not sure.

He’s by far one of, if not the, best goalkeepers in the league and this season has been no exception. Gone are the worries that hung over his head in his first campaign at Old Trafford and De Gea has emerged as a real leader. Without him, it would have been even worse.

Pantomime villain strikes; Twitter rejoices

We all love to hate Diego Costa. The most evil-looking of strikers makes for the perfect pantomime villain with his snarling appearance and dodgy style of play. Sunderland cannot afford to lose to Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, but Costa’s goal has put Sam Allardyce’s side up against in already.

Sunderland fans aren’t happy and its fair to say there’s some anger in the air.

People just don’t like Costa – or Sunderland – but Arsenal fans are clearly confused about who to feel more bitter about.

Fortunately the world isn’t overrun with Sunderland fans and we have some rather chirpy Geordies about, too!

Newcastle probably want to make sure that they do their own job (beating Villa) before they have too much of a chuckle at Sunderland’s failings.

No one seems to like Sunderland. Is it because of Big Sam? The poor guy, all he ever does is produce beautiful, slick football. He’s a gift to the Premier League and Sunderland have just been doing wonderfully for years.

The Blues have lost their title, but they’re sure having an impact!

Five reasons Arsenal fans should be excited by this potential unknown £15m signing

Rumours are surfacing that Arsenal are finally close to completing a move for a striker. But Alvaro Morata is not the man supposedly heading to the Emirates Stadium, nor is Gonzalo Higuain. Instead, the Gunners are set to spend £15m on young Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa.

Arsenal fans have been longing for a forward man for some time, after yet another season of Olivier Giroud leading the line, with minimal success. Now, with Danny Welbeck out for the majority of next season and Giroud fast running out of supporters in north London, a new striker has to be priority for Wenger this summer.

While this may not be the big name signing that will thrill the masses at Emirates, there is plenty to like about this young Brazilian Prodigy.

Here are Five things Arsenal fans need to know about Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa…

A Senior International

After impressing in the Brazilian Premier League with Santos, Barbosa received his first international call-up in March and scored on his debut in a 2-0 Brazil win over Panama.

Incredibly, in his very next game in the famous yellow, Gabriel scored yet again, the time against Haiti in the Copa America.

The New Neymar

With so many obvious similarities to his compatriot, it is no wonder ‘Gabigol’, as he is affectionately nicknamed, is being touted as ‘the new Neymar’ in his homeland.

Not only does the 19-year-old play his trade at Santos, he also possesses Neymar’s light-footed speed, an eye for both a goal and an assist and the sort of versatility that allows him to play as winger, No.10, or a slightly withdrawn centre-forward.

Goals, Goals, Goals

There is a reason why he is nicknamed ‘Gabigol’!

While the young star is yet to have a Ronaldo-like season of scoring, he has been a consistent threat in front of goal since the tender age of 16 and looks more threatening with every passing season.

In his 148 appearances for Santos, Barbosa has netted 54 times are an average of a goal scored every 2.7 games.

[ad_pod id=’1617-transfers’ align=’center’]

Physical Weakness

One major flaw to Gabriel Barbosa’s game is his physical strength. At just 5ft.9″, the Premier League could well be a land of giants for the youngster next season.

Commentary from his home nation has highlighted his struggle against strong, physical teams in the Brazilian League; if this is the case, he will need to work on this part of his game regularly before the new domestic season in England.

[ad_pod id=’1617-transfers’ align=’center’]

The Praise of a Nation

In the most football-mad nation on this planet, stars are often born, and Brazil think they have found another one.

Not only have former coaches and players come out praising Gabriel but one of the chief scouts in Brazil, Betinho, has given rave reviews of the 19-year-old to the media:

“Many have said that he has no strength and resistance to make it as a professional, but I think he will be the idol of his generation. He is a healthy, dedicated and focused boy, born with the gift of goals.”

Let’s hope so, Arsenal fans.

Three vital players if Everton are to qualify for Europe…

Evertonians will be hoping that the arrival of a new manager sees a change in their fortunes. Ronald Koeman arrives with pedigree of success in both England and Holland, the Dutchman is a class act on and off the touchline.

His pragmatism will be welcomed to the club, too, after the idealistic mistakes of Roberto Martinez left the Toffees briefly flirting with relegation.

This season will be a huge one for the club. They have lost John Stones, Romelu Lukaku keeps gazing dreamily at other clubs and the squad needs several additions if they are yet to become top half regulars under Koeman. The right man is at the helm, that’s for sure, but work is to be done.

Whether additions are made or not, Everton do have a squad that should see them at least tussle with Stoke City and Southampton in the mid-table battleground.

These THREE will be key if they are to conquer the Premier League no-mans-land…

Idrissa Gueye

It was quite a surprise that so few clubs seemed to show much interest in Idrissa Gueye this summer. The midfielder was one of the few bright lights in an abysmal season for Aston Villa last time around.

With Gareth Barry now a true veteran, Besic injured and James McCarthy short of form, Gueye was an astute addition. The numbers don’t lie, only N’golo Kante averaged more interceptions and tackles per match than Gueye, he’s a ball-winner, a hard-worker and will add an extra tonne of energy to the Toffees’ midfield.

For those tough away games, particularly, Gueye’s performances in the centre of midfield will be absolutely vital.

Gerard Deulofeu

Football – Sunderland v Everton – Barclays Premier League – Stadium of Light – 12/4/14Gerard Deulofeu celebrates after his cross led to the first goal for Everton after Sunderland’s Wes Brown (R) scores an own goalMandatory Credit: Action Images / Craig BroughLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY. With Koeman already hinting at playing Deulofeu as a centre forward if Romelu Lukaku is unavailable, the Spaniard seems higher in the pecking order that he was under Roberto Martinez.

As his game continues to be blighted by an inconsistent end product, Deulofeu must take advantage of all of his talents this season.

The sparkling toes of the Spanish winger make well get fans off seats, but they are not giving enough to the team, as his decision-making and final ball often leave plenty to be desired.

It is time to come of age for Gerard Deulofeu.

Ross Barkley

After spending much of the European Championships nicely warming the bench for when Dele Alli was substituted, Ross Barkley has an enormous season in front of him. Easily eclipsed by the Tottenham man during the last campaign, Barkley has stagnated relatively over the previous couple of seasons.

Koeman is likely to give him a new lease of life and it will be interesting to see if the Dutchman looks to use Barkley in a deeper role. Allowing him to break the lines and attack the ball from deep, more like Lampard, than his current role that has often seen him isolated and too far up the pitch.

If Everton are going to have a successful season, Ross Barkley must begin to develop into the player that everyone thought he already would be by now.

Man United fans react on Twitter to Paul Pogba’s goal v. Leicester

What does £89million get you? An inconsistent midfielder only capable of playing in a team without Wayne Rooney is what it gets you.

I jest.

Paul Pogba has finally arrived for Manchester United and it came at the expense of Wayne Rooney and Leicester City.

All the talk before Manchester United’s Premier League clash with champions Leicester City was about Wayne Rooney being dropped to the bench, and the question being asked was whether Paul Pogba could finally flourish without the 30-year-old alongside him.

And those questions were duly answered at the end of the first half as Pogba headed in from just five yards to register his first United goal and the Red Devils’ fourth of the afternoon.

And it was well and truly deserved. Pogba’s first half was impressive and you could clearly tell he was able to express himself with Ander Herrera pulling the strings next to him.

Man United were devastating in the opening 45 minutes, and fans on Twitter just couldn’t get enough of that man Pogba…

Arsenal fans hit out at Van Persie

Robin van Persie was once a cult-hero of Arsenal, until he burned his bridges with the Gunners by moving to Manchester United, becoming public enemy number one –  until Cesc Fabregas signed for Chelsea, that is.

Ahead of his return to English football tonight in the Europa League – Turkish giants Fenerbahce travel to face Manchester United – the Dutch international has irked Arsenal fans on Twitter with some controversial comments in which he called the Manchester club “home”.

Considering he made 277 appearances for Arsenal and just 105 for Manchester United, it’s quite a strange comment and, understandably, Gunners fans are furious – although some of them stated they couldn’t care less, having cut ties to their former captain long ago.

It will still add salt to the wounds, which have only recently started to heal, of Gooners and the pain is unlikely to be fully gone until Arsenal finally get their hands on the Premier League crown that has eluded them since they went unbeaten in the 2003/04 season.

West Ham eyeing League One’s Romeo

According to reports from Mirror Football, West Ham are preparing a £1.5million transfer bid for Millwall’s highly-rated defender Mahlon Romeo.

Who?

A good question. Romeo – at least, not in Shakespearean terms – is hardly a household name. But the 21-year-old is rapidly establishing himself at The Den, making 16 appearances already this season, and boasts some pedigree, having spent much of his youth career at Arsenal before leaving in 2012 in search of first-team football.

That led to a move to Gillingham, a short loan switch to Dover Athletic and subsequently a transfer to Millwall in summer 2015. He became a regular for the Lions in the second half of last season and has now cemented his place in their starting XI – also picking up seven caps for Antigua and Barbuda in the process.

What’s the word, then?

According to Mirror Football, Romeo’s increasing importance in South London hasn’t gone unnoticed by Millwall’s bitter rivals West Ham. Hammers scouts reportedly ran the rule over the full-back during their 2-1 win over Fleetwood last weekend – the third time they’ve watched him in action so far this season.

Do West Ham need a right-back?

Most definitely. The fact Havard Nordtveit, Sam Byram, Michail Antonio and Alvaro Arbeloa have all played at right-back already this season tells all about how much of a problem position it’s become for the Hammers – undoubtedly an underlying influence on them conceding the second-most goals of any Premier League side after whipping-boys-in-waiting, Hull City.

Whether Romeo’s ready to come in and fill the void, however, remains another question that only Bilic can truly answer. But the likelihood is that Romeo’s being targeted as a long-term addition rather than a quick fix – suggesting a move to the London Stadium could well come at the end of the season rather than January.

Four reasons Leeds United have turned their season around

Following a 1-0 home defeat against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town in September, Leeds United once again appeared to be in disarray after taking just four points from their opening six Championship matches, which had left them 22nd in the table.

Rumours started flying around that yet another managerial change could be made by Massimo Cellino with yet another disappointing season in the pipeline, but Garry Monk avoided the chop and has turned his side’s fortunes around in the following six weeks.

The Whites are now ninth and just one point outside of the play-off positions, and there is a real feel-good factor around Elland Road at the moment – especially following their 2-0 home win against Burton Albion on Saturday.

That got us thinking here at Football FanCast. What has changed for Leeds in such a short space of time?

Here are four reasons why they have turned the corner…

Cellino is finally showing patience

Following that defeat to Huddersfield – their fourth defeat in six Championship matches – there were rumours Garry Monk was on the verge of the sack.

It wouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise if it had happened, based on Cellino’s history of firing managers.

However, where he might have wielded the axe in the past, he instead decided to keep the faith with his manager and gave him time to turn things around.

It is a decision that has paid off for the Italian.

Monk has settled on a preferred formation/starting XI

There were times early in the season when it seemed as though Monk was still unsure of his best starting XI and formation.

However, he has stuck with the 4-2-3-1 formation more recently and it appears to be the best fit for the players he has at his disposal.

Individuals such as Pablo Hernandez, Eunan O’Kane and Chris Wood are thriving, with the latter in especially good form after scoring his tenth goal of the season against Burton.

The centre-back partnership

Leeds have really struggled defensively in recent seasons. But in Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson, they finally seem to have a centre-back partnership that isn’t afraid to put their heads in where it hurts, yet also adhere to Monk’s style of passing it out from the back.

The only issue is that the duo are both only on loan at Elland Road. One of the club’s priorities will surely be to see if they can turn the temporary agreements into a permanent deals.

Elland Road is becoming a fortress again

The passion of the fans has never been questioned, but because of disputes with the owner and poor performances on the pitch, it felt as though Leeds were beginning to lose that identity and togetherness.

But positive showings and results are helping to fix those issues, and since that defeat to Huddersfield, they have won four and drawn one of their five Championship fixtures at home.

Leeds appear to be marching on together, once again.
