Counties remain hopeful of two overseas players for 2021

Contractual status of Kolpak players uncertain due to Brexit and impact of Covid-19

Counties are likely to be able to field two overseas players in the County Championship next season, despite the impact of Covid-19 on the finances of English domestic cricket. The Kolpak loophole is due to close on December 31 when the UK’s transition period with the European Union ends, and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) has recommended increasing the number of overseas signings permitted in Championship and 50-over cricket from one to two to enable affected players to extend their county careers.Any change would need to be discussed and ratified by the ECB’s cricket committee and then approved by the board. The issue is an ongoing topic for discussion internally, and a PCA spokesperson said: “Our focus is on retaining jobs for our members and that means all players, including the 134 out-of-contract players and Kolpak players.”The majority of counties have already cancelled or deferred their overseas players’ contracts for this season due to the uncertainty surrounding the domestic season, restrictions on international travel, and the financial implications of the pandemic. But some counties have already made plans to employ two overseas players in the Championship next season. Essex, for example, deferred Peter Siddle’s contract to 2021, and Simon Harmer – currently on a Kolpak registration – has guarantees in his deal that mean he will become an overseas player next year.”It sounds more and more as though that has been agreed,” Derek Bowden, Essex’s chief executive, said. “We’re still hopeful and being told that two overseas players will be permitted. There’s no reason to believe it won’t be.”Harmer is one of several players on Kolpak deals known to have a clause in his contract meaning he will switch to overseas status next season. Dane Vilas has an agreement whereby he will become an overseas player at Lancashire, with the club retaining an option to sign New Zealand’s BJ Watling after cancelling his contract for this season, while Duanne Olivier has similar guarantees at Yorkshire. There are 10 players who won contracts to play as domestic players in the Hundred that are highly unlikely to be eligible to do so next year, Brexit permitting, with a handful more or less clear on their status having qualified through EU passports. Discussions regarding contracts for the tournament are ongoing, but it is understood that adding an additional overseas slot per team is unlikely at this stage. The PCA announced on Monday that the collective agreement that has seen players take salary reductions of up to 20% since April has been extended, with special dispensation for the 134 players whose contracts expire at the end of this season.Players in the final year of their deals have been permitted to talk to other counties since June 1, but the transfer market is likely to be limited as teams look to cut costs rather than add to their wage bills.

Everton struck gold signing club legend who’d be worth £78m in 2024

Over the years, Everton have had their fair share of cult heroes who have given multiple generations of supporters memories to last a lifetime.

From Dixie Dean to Tim Cahill, the club have employed many talents who have gone on to achieve unthinkable things and set records that are yet to be beaten – including Dean's record of 60 league goals during the 1927/28 campaign.

However, in recent years, the Toffees have found icons hard to come by, with Leighton Baines the closest player to a club legend, having featured 420 times for the Toffees over a 13-year period.

Everton's Leighton Baines

The left-back remains an integral part of the club, leading the next generation of potential Everton stars, with Baines currently occupying the role of the club's U18 head coach.

Everton have also had another hero return to the club in recent years, with the former Toffees striker still a monster hit with the fanbase after his successful stint as a player on Merseyside.

Duncan Ferguson's time at Everton

Striker Duncan Ferguson epitomised everything about Everton Football Club during his time as a player and temporary manager – passion, commitment and desire.

The Scotsman originally arrived at the club way back in 1994 from Scottish giants Rangers, looking to build on the 17th-placed finish from the season prior.

He would be an instant hit at Goodison, scoring 22 goals throughout his first three full campaigns with the club, helping the Toffees climb to a 6th placed finish in the 1995/96 campaign.

However, after just four years at the club, he would move on to join fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, in a deal conducted behind Walter Smith's back, with the forward costing the Magpies £8m.

It was always a case of unfinished business at Goodison for the Scottish international, eventually rejoining the Toffees just two years later – in a move that would see him end his career at the club.

Ferguson would go on to enjoy another six seasons with Everton, retiring at the age of 33 after a total of 263 appearances for the club that included 69 goals – cementing himself as a club legend.

He was undoubtedly a bargain given his impact on Merseyside, with his transfer fee in 1994 subject to drastic inflation 30 years on…

How much Duncan Ferguson would be worth in 2024

If that same move went through today, Ferguson would've cost the club a jaw-dropping £78m to get through the door, according to Totally Money's Transfer Index.

That would make the former Everton forward the most expensive member of the current Toffees squad by some distance, with Dwight McNeil, the club's highest-valued player as per Football Transfers, not even worth half of the fee Ferguson would've commanded in 2024.

It may have been an expensive deal 30 years ago, but Ferguson, who was dubbed Everton's "greatest servant" by chairman Bill Kenwright, was a bargain and a player who left a real impact on the football club.

Although the club have secured their Premier League status for another season, boss Sean Dyche would've loved to have a player like the Scotsman within his ranks.

His relentless nature alongside his aggressive and tenacious playstyle fit the bill for a Dyche centre-forward, with the club desperately needing to unearth the next Ferguson this summer.

Next Bayern Munich manager: 10 candidates to replace Thomas Tuchel – list

The conclusion of the 2023/24 season leaves Bayern Munich in an unfamiliar position: trophyless and desperately searching for a new manager.

Changes in the dugout are hardly a new phenomenon for the Bavarians, but something is different this time around, with the club appearing to be frantically sounding out plenty of candidates – including Thomas Tuchel, who nearly made a U-turn after previously saying he would leave at the end of the season as planned.

So with the ex-Bundesliga juggernauts looking uncharacteristically scattergun when it comes to finding a successor, it is hard to keep up with who is in the running to take over at the Allianz Arena.

Here are the managers who seem to be leading the race, though this can easily change over what could be a volatile summer in Munich.

Odds correct as of 22nd May 2024

1 Vincent Kompany Burnley

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany.

Vincent Kompany has become a sought-after manager in recent weeks, with the Belgian being linked with the vacancies at Bayern and Brighton, among others.

That comes despite facing relegation from the Premier League with Burnley and a lack of high-level success in management, even if his trophy-laden playing career precedes him. It would be a bold choice by anyone to hire the Belgian, and that he is heavily backed at this stage is intriguing in itself.

2 Mauricio Pochettino Free agent (Last job: Chelsea)

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Mauricio Pochettino recently became a sudden managerial departure himself, and this has opened up the prospect of him swapping west London for Bavaria.

Since his exit from Stamford Bridge, the indication has been that he could jump straight into another role, and with Bayern looking to return to the pinnacle of German football, reuniting Harry Kane with his former manager may now become a distinct possibility.

Next Chelsea manager: Who could replace Mauricio Pochettino?

Pochettino has sensationally left Chelsea, but who could be in the running for the job?

ByRobbie Walls May 27, 2024 3 Roberto De Zerbi Free agent (Last job: Brighton)

Roberto De Zerbi is now available to approach without having to negotiate with his club, having parted ways with Brighton & Hove Albion following the end of the season.

One hurdle to overcome, should they wish to hire the Italian, could be that the ex-Seagulls boss appeared to suggest that he would be taking an extended break after his departure from the south coast side.

But having been mentioned as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in recent months, perhaps a move to Bayern wouldn’t be totally above his station.

Next Brighton manager: Who could replace Roberto De Zerbi?

There’s a new man leading the race…

ByStephan Georgiou May 28, 2024 4 Hansi Flick Free agent (Last job: Germany)

Former boss Hansi Flick knows how to win at Bayern, so would be a safer bet than most on this list. His stint as Germany boss, which included their early exit at the World Cup, may serve to taint his reputation, but he will always remain a Champions League and Bundesliga winner, and returning to familiar surroundings may bring the best out of him once again.

But whether that is what this team needs having finally relinquished their domestic crown remains to be seen.

5 Sebastian Hoeness VfB Stuttgart

This one could be a long shot, even if it would make a lot of sense from a selfish point of view. Sebastian Hoeness’ Stuttgart side shocked the Bundesliga not only in qualifying for next season’s Champions League, but doing so ahead of Bayern, as well as finalists Borussia Dortmund.

It has been said that but for Bayer Leverkusen’s gargantuan heroics, the achievements of Hoeness’ team would be the story of the season.

So weakening a rival by picking off their talented manager would almost certainly serve Bayern well, though indications are that Hoeness is committed to Stuttgart for the moment.

6 Erik ten Hag Manchester United

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Erik ten Hag has been doing a poor job at Manchester United, with his side having to settle for eighth place in the Premier League. Indeed, the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester City remains their only chance of playing in Europe next season.

However, it appears the powers that be at Bayern see things a little differently, with Ten Hag mentioned as a potential candidate for the top job in Bavaria despite a terrible campaign.

But for all his accomplishments, it is difficult to imagine Bayern seeing him as the best option given the Dutchman’s limited success in two years at United.

7 Thomas Frank Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank

Reports in recent days had suggested that Thomas Frank has been mentioned internally as a potential candidate for the vacant role.

Though while Frank’s job in turning Brentford into a stable Premier League side has been admirable, it could be argued that there has been little to suggest he would be capable of thriving at a club like Bayern Munich. It would represent one hell of a jump up, so this is surely on the unlikelier end of the probability scale.

8 Massimiliano Allegri Free agent (Last job: Juventus)

There are a lot of things that go in Massimiliano Allegri’s favour when it comes to pitching for the Bayern job. He’s a serial league winner and has handled many egos in a supremely talented Juventus side over a long period of time.

Therefore, should Bayern be preparing to build their next dynasty, Allegri can boast of being in charge of one himself.

However, the nature of his departure in Turin will surely cast doubt over his suitability for the role, not least in the wake of another sub-par league campaign from the Old Lady.

9 Xabi Alonso Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

The fact Xabi Alonso is this far down the list perhaps points towards Bayern’s lack of confidence in getting him in, with the Spaniard leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unprecedented Bundesliga title in an unbeaten campaign.

Naturally, continuing the project in Leverkusen appears to be the most likely outcome, with many players set to do the same. However, you wouldn’t be surprised if Bayern keep their eyes on their former midfielder and pounce if given an opportunity.

10 Zinedine Zidane Free agent (Last job: Real Madrid)

Zinedine Zidane’s record is certainly impressive, though he has never managed outside of Real Madrid. What does go in the Frenchman’s favour is his ability to control a dressing room full to the brim with stars – something that could come in handy if Bayern come calling.

However, there are surely better-placed candidates than a manager who has not managed in club football for three years.

TNPL 2020 postponed again, may not happen this year

TNCA will now look at November 2020 or March 2021 to hold the tournament

Deivarayan Muthu31-Jul-2020

TNCA/TNPL

The fifth season of the 20-over Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has been postponed again and is “unlikely” to go ahead this year due to the growing threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in the state. The league was initially scheduled to run from June 10 to July 12, but the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) postponed the tournament in May, hoping to host it in the August-September window. On Saturday, the association issued a statement, saying it will now try to host the tournament in November 2020 or March 2021.*There have been nearly 240,000 positive Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu, with nearly 58,000 still active, and the latest government order has prohibited sporting events in August. While Chennai continues to be among the worst-affected cities in India, Salem and Coimbatore, which were set to be introduced as new venues, have also recorded cases of Covid-19.”The TNCA was looking at a window between end July-August to end September as a possible window for playing the 5th edition of the TNPL tournament. However, due to the ongoing Covid related issue in the State of Tamil Nadu, TNCA will not be in a position to host the tournament in this window,” TNCA secretary RS Ramasaamy said in the statement.”We will explore possibilities of playing the 5th edition of the tournament in an alternate window i.e either in November 2020 or in March 2021.”With IPL 2020 scheduled to run from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE, most of Tamil Nadu’s top players – R Ashwin (Delhi Capitals), Dinesh Karthik (Kolkata Knight Riders), Vijay Shankar (Sunrisers Hyderabad), and M Vijay (Chennai Super Kings) – will be out of India.A TNCA official told ESPNcricinfo official they may not be able to conduct the TNPL towards the end of the year as it may clash with a possible Indian domestic season. “The IPL is going to happen now and after the players may return from the IPL, the Ranji Trophy season may begin, so there is no window,” he said. The TNPL has attained sizeable popularity and following, especially in Tamil Nadu, providing a platform for youngsters to break into the IPL. Spinners Varun Chakravarthy, who was bought for INR 8.4 crore and INR 4 crore in 2018 and 2019 respectively, and R Sai Kishore, who was snapped up by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 20 lakh in the most recent auction, are among the league’s success stories. Chepauk Super Gillies had won the 2019 edition of the tournament, beating Dindigul Dragons in the final.*0950GMT: The story was updated after a statement from TNCA

Sourav Ganguly: MS Dhoni should have batted up the order more often

Ricky Ponting, meanwhile, is in awe of Dhoni’s ability to stay in control of his emotions

Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting have underlined different qualities that made MS Dhoni the player he became. Ganguly, Dhoni’s first India captain, felt promoting him to No. 3 early in his career was vindication of his batting talent. Ponting, meanwhile, lauded Dhoni’s ability to remain calm and not let emotions rule his on-field decision-making as a leader.Playing only his fifth ODI and batting at No. 3 for the first time, Dhoni made 148 against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam in April 2005, announcing his arrival in international cricket. Later that year in Jaipur, Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 145-ball 183 in a chase of 299 against Sri Lanka, once again from No. 3. It was at the time the highest ODI score in a run chase.Ganguly said he took the decision to promote Dhoni up the order while captaining him in the Challenger Trophy in Mumbai in February 2005. Dhoni opened for India Seniors in that tournament, and made an unbeaten 96-ball 102 in a chase of 276 against India B.”There was the Challenger Trophy, he (Dhoni) scored a hundred for my team while opening the batting, so I knew [of his potential],” Ganguly said in an interview with SportsTak. “He got the opportunity to bat at No. 3 in Vizag, scored a superb hundred and whenever he has got a chance to play more overs, he has scored big.”A player is made when you send him up the order, you can’t make a player by playing him lower down the order. I always believe you can’t become a big cricketer by sitting inside the dressing room. The kind of abilities, especially the six-hitting prowess he had, was rare. He changed his game towards the end of his career but when the raw MS Dhoni arrived, it was very important to make him free.”Despite averaging a phenomenal 82.75 at No. 3, Dhoni only batted there on 16 occasions in ODIs, and only 18 times in the top three. Ganguly wished he had batted in the top order more often. “When I had retired, I aired my views many times, that Dhoni should bat higher up the order.”MS Dhoni, in charge at Chennai Super Kings as usual•BCCI

‘He didn’t let emotions get the better of him’Ponting, meanwhile, has had the chance to both play and coach against Dhoni. The two were opposing captains 26 times in international cricket, while in the IPL, Ponting has coached both Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals against the Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant sides led by Dhoni. Through all these battles, Ponting has admired one quality of Dhoni’s.”He [MS Dhoni] never seems to let his emotions get the better of him, which is a really good trait in a leader — as hard as I tried when I was on the field, I could never quite stay in complete control of my emotions.” Ponting told news.com.au.”Indian teams always seemed to lift when he was captain. He always seemed to have this knack to be able to get the best out of his players. You knew that he had things under control, and his teammates loved that about him.”I spend a lot of time in India now, so I know how revered he is in that part of the world. Even when you travel around the world and you listen to cricket fans, they talk about Dhoni and his leadership and how calm he seems to be under pressure on the field.”
