Ed Barnard, Ben Cox defy scene-stealing Stuart Broad

Worcestershire duo dig in after Notts looked poised for quick victory as Broad chimes in with bat and ball

David Hopps29-Apr-2022It says a lot for the calibre of Ed Barnard’s third Worcestershire hundred that for the first time this season Stuart Broad decided he must try to curb a growing rebellion and really slipped himself. He was no longer feeling his way into the season, drawing on years of experience in his meticulous preparation for a potential England recall, he was pumping in with the old ball, a respected adversary in his sights, seeking to fashion a Nottinghamshire victory with as much energy as he could muster. Barnard made him forget the future and brought him into the present.Broad in his veteran phase is not as quick as he was. Allegedly. His speeds varied between 76 and 81mph all day, according to the ECB speed guns that are the latest impressive enhancement to the excellent live county feeds. A suggestion is taking hold, however, that the speeds are a little on the slow side, a view perhaps approved by ageing fast bowlers. Intriguingly, this is the opposite to the traditional whispers about international cricket where a bit of ramping up has occasionally been suspected. Perish the thought that according to official ECB figures England could go into the New Zealand Test series with the most celebrated but also the slowest new-ball attack in Test cricket. But he was at the top of the range (whatever that range was), with some nasty bounce to boot, as Barnard, for so long regarded as a bowling allrounder, battled through his final assault with a century beckoning and earned the right to be regarded as equally proficient with bat and ball.He was 98 when Nottinghamshire took the second new ball with four overs remaining – it can be safely assumed that bit had not quite gone according to plan. But he worked Luke Fletcher’s first delivery to third man, comfortably took on Haseeb Hameed’s throw, and secured a just reward. It fell to Broad to bowl the final over of the day as Trent Bridge was bathed in evening sunshine. But Barnard and Ben Cox, whose first half-century of the season had contributed to an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 125 in 47 overs, stood firm. They took a few blows and batted with considerable discipline. There are football fans around, apparently, who hope to see Notts wrap up victory before Nottingham Forest continue their promotion push against Swansea just across the road at three o’clock but it feels a little optimistic.Related

“Ed Barnard, just had nerves of steel, really,” said Cox, whose career suggests he knows a bit about such things. “He was so calm at the crease. Today was tough against a high-class attack on what certainly had been a favourable wicket on the first day – albeit one that had changed a bit.”A match that looked likely at one stage to be claimed by Nottinghamshire within two days remains alive with Worcestershire holding a 118-run lead with five wickets remaining. The Lincoln Green stripes of the first day have long gone and an easing surface still makes Nottinghamshire strong favourites, but balls have occasionally gone through the top and Barnard’s application has given his side hope.Barnard’s career progress is a two-finger salute to those who advocate the cutting of 18 professional counties for a supposed future of The Best v The Best, primarily based upon areas of high population. His background – Shrewsbury School and England U19s – suggests that he would have made the grade in a slimmed-down system, but it is unlikely that he would have been the same rounded cricketer he now is. His batting talents have progressed more slowly than his bowling – he was not particularly prolific with the bat at junior level – but Worcestershire have nurtured those talents over many seasons and now, at 26, have given him the chance to make the grade at No. 6.His maiden hundred only came last season, in a bore draw against Essex at Chelmsford, although he was less boring than some. A second century followed against Warwickshire at New Road in another run-fest. This time the demands were more onerous. When he came to the crease, Worcestershire were still 75 in arrears, having lost four for 32 in 12 overs.Fletcher had uprooted Ed Pollock’s middle stump second ball with a wonderful delivery that left the left-hander from around the wicket before Jake Libby drove with uncharacteristic looseness to be caught at backward point driving loosely. Broad produced bounce and movement to remove Azhar Ali in the same region. Dane Paterson added Brett D’Oliveira, who lobbed into the leg-side.The batter who really catches the eye in this Worcestershire side is Jack Haynes, son of the former Worcestershire allrounder, Gavin. With respect, he looks as if he has the potential to outdo his father by a considerable margin, but looks can deceive and he is still awaiting his first half-century of the season. Broad, back for a third spell in mid-afternoon, old-manned him by setting him up for a hook, on 49, which he obligingly yanked straight to Ben Duckett at deep square. There were runs, too, for Broad, at the start of the day, a hit-about-him innings that included two sixes against Charlie Morris as Worcestershire, who must have been watching too many Test match highlights, overdid the short stuff on a pitch still offering bowlers assistance by traditional means. Broad’s unbeaten 45 from 27 deliveries represented his best score in county cricket for five years, but the only stats that England will be studying will be 18-3-49-2… with the chance of a five-for in the morning.

Chelsea impressed by "excellent" £20m PL star after scouting mission

Chelsea were left impressed after conducting a scouting mission to assess an “excellent” £20m Premier League player, according to a report.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have made it clear they intend to strengthen their attack, having drawn up a shortlist of potential targets, with the likes of Liam Delap and Alexander Isak said to be under consideration.

In fact, such is their interest in the latter player, the board are now prepared to green-light an £83m bid. Newcastle United are currently trying to extend Isak’s contract, though they would be willing to analyse Chelsea’s offer.

It is fair to say Enzo Maresca’s side have surpassed expectations so far this season, sitting in second place ahead of their weekend clash with Spurs, but the manager clearly still thinks he needs extra reinforcements if they are to mount an unlikely title challenge.

As such, the west London club have been running the rule over new defenders, with Football Transfers reporting that Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Willian Pacho is now being targeted, alongside Barcelona’s Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo.

Chelsea targeting Zabarnyi

Now, it appears as though Chelsea have set their sights on an option from much closer to home, with The Boot Room reporting scouts were sent to watch Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi during the Cherries’ victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

The Blues are in the market for a new centre-back as they are understood to be unconvinced by the first-choice pairing of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.

Zabarnyi has been the subject of long-standing interest, having been tracked since before he moved to the Vitality Stadium for a fee of £20m back in 2023, and he impressed scouts with his performance on Thursday evening.

Chelsea are said to have a good relationship with Bournemouth following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s loan move in the summer, meaning they are well-positioned to complete a deal.

Zabarnyi put in a solid performance against Spurs, helping them keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory, though there are question marks over whether he is at the level to improve Chelsea.

The Ukrainian does not stand out on any metric over the past year, ranking in just the 47th percentile for tackles completed per 90 and the 41st percentile for interceptions, when compared to his positional peers over the past year.

Colwill also out-performs the Bournemouth star across a number of these key metrics, including blocks and pass completion rate per 90, indicating it would be a little harsh to replace the Englishman, while Maresca was full of praise for Fofana earlier this season, saying:

“Wes is a player that I really love, I am in love with Wes.”

“He is doing fantastic after one year injured and, for any player in the world, when you are out for one year and then you come back, it is not easy, and he is doing top. This is the only thing we want from him.”

Zabarnyi has previously been lauded as “excellent” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, but Chelsea should perhaps consider other options at centre-back in the January transfer window.

Auckland win Plunket Shield after Covid-19 hits Northern Districts

The Whangarei game was abandoned on the fourth day after several positive cases in the ND squad

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Apr-2022A Covid-19 outbreak within the Northern Districts squad forced their Plunket Shield game against Central Districts to be called off. The knock-on effect of that is Auckland are now the champions of first-class cricket in New Zealand. They last won the title in 2015-16.Northern Districts had just begun their second innings, having put up 496 for 6 declared in the first. Central Districts had responded with 408 for 7 declared and their bowlers had picked up an early wicket as well. But then, just before the final day’s play on April 1, some ND players began to show symptoms of the virus. Subsequent testing revealed that they had been infected, which led to the game being shut down.To keep up with the disruption caused by the pandemic, the rankings in all of New Zealand’s domestic competitions are based on points per game.”In a circumstance where a match is called off due to Covid-19, neither team receives points, and the fixture is not included when calculating the points per match ratio,” an NZC press release on Saturday said.”Together with runaway leaders the Auckland Aces (who can be equalled, but can not be overtaken, on average points per game) Northern Districts is now the only other team alive in the Plunket Shield.”However, the Aces, [who beat Wellington on Wednesday], have a game in hand and require just one further point from their last two fixtures (with a maximum of 20 points available per round) to secure the title outright.”The ICC had to deal with something similar during the inaugural World Test championship in 2020-21. With several matches being affected by Covid-19, they changed the rules midway through the tournament, saying a team’s points will be calculated as a percentage of the total points they had up for grabs.”The cancellation of the match has therefore seen Northern Districts return to second spot on the table, overtaking Canterbury on average points per game,” the NZC added, “Despite Canterbury meanwhile having picked up eight first-innings bonus points from their drawn match with the Otago Volts, after a weather-hit final day in Rangiora.”

McKenna must unleash Ipswich phenom who’d walk into the Wolves team

Ipswich Town fans knew the Premier League was going to be tough this season, but they might not have realised just how tough it was going to be.

Despite impressive results against Aston Villa, Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, Kieran McKenna’s side find themselves down in 18th place and four points off safety.

The last month or so has been particularly brutal for the Tractor Boys, but they have the perfect opportunity to bounce back with a relegation six-pointer against Wolverhampton Wanderers later today.

Moreover, while the Suffolk side will have to turn around their recent form, they’re blessed with an exciting star who’d walk into the Wolves team, a start McKenna has to start.

Ipswich's recent form

Things were starting to look up for Ipswich either side of the most recent international break, as they picked up their first win at the expense of Spurs just before and then earned an impressive point at home against United in the first game back.

However, in the three games since then, things have not quite worked out for McKenna’s side.

For example, they lost 1-0 away to Nottingham Forest courtesy of a Chris Wood penalty given away by Sammie Szmodics.

They followed that up with a dreary 1-0 defeat at home to fellow relegation candidates Crystal Palace a few days later.

Worst of all, it looked like the team had turned a corner last weekend and that the Portman Road crowd were going to see their first win of the season when they were leading Bournemouth 1-0 for the vast majority of the game, only for the Cherries to score in the 87th and 95th minute to leave the home side stunned.

In short, the team desperately needs a positive result this afternoon, and to ensure they have the best chance of getting it, McKenna must start a player who’d waltz into this Wolves side.

The Ipswich ace who'd walk into the Wolves team

So, it should probably come as no surprise that the player we are talking about is, of course, Liam Delap.

The “incredible” young forward, as former manager Pep Guardiola dubbed him, has been brilliant for Ipswich this season, scoring six goals and providing one assist in 15 league appearances while also being a focal point for the rest of his team to play around.

Now, you could argue that Wolves’ starting striker Jørgen Strand Larsen might have something to say about this, as he has a slightly better haul of six goals and two assists in as many appearances, even if he has played more minutes.

However, while the Norwegian is certainly an exciting player to watch and someone capable of forging a career in the top flight, he is not on the same level as the Winchester-born dynamo, and we can see that by looking at their underlying numbers.

For example, in the vast majority of relevant metrics, it’s the Tractor Boys’ marksman who comes out ahead, metrics including but not limited to non-penalty expected goals plus assists, actual non-penalty goals, progressive passes and carries, successful take-ons, shots and shot-creating actions, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Delap has not necessarily been at his very best in the last few weeks, his quality and ability are undeniable.

Therefore, if McKenna wants to give Ipswich the best chance of stopping their current slide and picking up their second win, he has to start the Englishman.

While the goals are flowing at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, evergreen frontman Ronaldo has now reached 40 years of age. He continues to make himself available for club and country, with another quest for Nations League glory being taken in with Portugal.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

CR7 is expected to play on towards the 2026 World Cup, with there a desire on his part to reach 1,000 career goals before considering retirement. He has, however, been told that he is not the player he once was and should walk away once eternal rival Messi decides that he will be hanging up record-breaking boots.

Getty/GOALWHAT JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK SAID

That is the opinion of former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, with the ex-Netherlands international telling : "Football doesn't need Ronaldo at the 2026 World Cup. Ronaldo has been one of the best players for a long time; one of the best players in history. I think, at the moment, he’s doing himself more harm than good to be playing for Portugal still – it’s impacting his legacy.

"And if you ask me, Messi or Ronaldo, I will always say Ronaldo because of what he had to do to get to that level and to stay there.

"We all know as footballers, and I know this really, really well from my playing time, there's a time when you come and there's a time where you need to go. I think his time had come a while ago, and he needs to give somebody else the opportunity.

"I don't think that he is at the moment better than the other options that Portugal have. Some games you need to press, some games you need to do different things, and I don't think that he can do that anymore. There’s no shame in that. For him to even be playing at 40 is a landmark in itself.

"There comes a time when you have to hang the boots up. I think that time will come when Messi stops. I think when Messi decides to call it a day, so will Ronaldo."

WHAT NEXT FOR CRISTIANO RONALDO?

Ronaldo is up to 218 caps for Portugal, with 135 goals being recorded along the way. He retains unwavering belief in his own ability, while always demanding the highest of standards, and sees no reason to call it a day while still being capable of making a positive contribution in domestic and international competition.

Kulusevski 2.0: Spurs target unreal Maddison upgrade in £40m "diamond"

As it was last year, this season has been a roller coaster for Tottenham Hotspur fans.

One week, the North Londoners look like the best team in the country and are pulling apart the Premier League champions 4-0, and then the next, they lose at home to winless Ipswich Town.

Ange Postecoglou has turned his side into great entertainers but has not been able to address their problems with consistency, and were it not for the incredible Dejan Kulusevski, things could be looking a lot worse at the moment.

So, fans should be excited about recent reports linking them to a player who could mirror the Swede’s journey to Spurs and be an incredible upgrade on James Maddison as well.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of several top-flight teams keen on signing Belgian sensation Charles De Ketelaere.

Charles De Ketelaere for Atalanta.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report claims that Liverpool, West Ham United, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Manchester City and Aston Villa are all interested in the Atatlanta star.

This number of top sides vying for the talented playmaker is undoubtedly far from ideal for the North Londoners, but the good news is that the story claims he is valued at just £40m, which could prove to be a real bargain for someone of his quality.

It could still be a complicated transfer to get over the line, but given De Ketelaere’s sensational ability, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he could be the next Kulusevski and would be an upgrade on Maddison.

De Ketelaere's comparisons to Kulusevski & Maddison

So, before we look at how De Ketelaere stacks up against Maddison, it’s worth examining the reasons his signing would mirror that of Kulusevski’s.

Former Juventus forward Dejan Kulusevski.

The first is that, like the Swedish international, the Atalanta star would be making his way over from Serie A, akin to the Lilywhites star’s move from Juventus in 2022.

The second, more meaty point of comparison is that, like the Stockholm-born star, the Belgian gem is an incredibly talented attacker who can, and has, played everywhere from centre-forward to the wings and all over midfield.

Lastly, like Kulusevski, the former Club Brugge prospect is just an incredibly entertaining player to watch and has that increasingly rare ability to get fans off their seats with a sublime piece of skill, unreal goal or pinpoint pass.

With that said, as he’s spent most of this season playing in an attacking midfield role, the “wonderful” talent, as dubbed by journalist Dougie Critchley, would likely come in as competition for Maddison were to move to N17, and unfortunately for the Englishman, we reckon he’d displace him, and quite easily at that.

For example, in just 23 appearances this season, the 23-year-old “diamond”, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored eight goals and provided nine assists, equating to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.35 games for the Bergamo outfit.

In contrast, the former Leicester City star has scored seven goals and provided five assists in as many games, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.91 games.

Finally, Postecoglou would be able to rely on the Brugge-born dynamo more than his current co-vice-captain, as the most games he’s missed in a single season through injury is just ten, which is a far cry from the Englishman’s spotty fitness record.

Ultimately, while Maddison is an unbelievably gifted footballer, De Ketelaere just looks to be even more so, and considering his valuation isn’t outrageous, Daniel Levy and Co should be doing all they can to bring him to N17.

Sir Dave Brailsford joins ECB high-performance review as Andrew Strauss targets five-year plan

Senior figures from UK Sport, FA and Manchester City also invited to give input

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-2022Andrew Strauss says that England’s ambition is to become the “best in the world at all formats of the men’s game within the next five years”, after announcing a panel of experts for the ECB’s high-performance review that includes Sir Dave Brailsford, the former head of the British Cycling team that topped the medal tables at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.Writing in a blog post on the ECB’s website, Strauss reiterated his intention to be “bold” in assessing the failings that have left England’s Test team with one victory in 17 matches since March 2021, and with their lowest ICC ranking since 1995. His aim, he added, is to have solid proposals for the game to vote on by September, in order for the restructuring to begin in time for the 2023 season.”Over the past 42 years, England’s Men have been the number one ranked Test team in the world for a total of 12 months, and 50-over number one for 64 months,” Strauss wrote. “In T20 cricket, we have held the top spot for 748 days since the inception of those rankings in 2011.”At the moment, we aren’t top in any format. So we want to set an ambitious and clear goal – to become the best in the world at all formats of the men’s game within the next five years.”It’s extremely ambitious because we’ve never done it before. But why can’t it be achievable? What’s stopping us – and what else could help us get there? That’s what I want our high-performance review to consider.”From within cricket, the ECB’s panel includes Rob Key, England men’s director of cricket, and Durham’s Marcus North, alongside Daryl Mitchell from the PCA and Mo Bobat, the ECB’s performance director. From outside the game, Strauss has also secured the expert input of Kate Baker, director of performance at UK Sport; Simon Timson, Manchester City’s performance director; Dan Ashworth, the former FA director of elite development, and Penny Hughes, the ex-chair of Aston Martin. However, Brailsford – who is currently the director of the professional cycling team Ineos Grenadiers – is arguably the most prominent name on the panel. Strauss has long been an admirer of his “marginal gains” philosophy, and adopted many of those principles on England’s victorious Ashes tour of 2010-11.Brailsford’s reputation within cycling was recently tarnished, however, when his ex-colleague, Dr Richard Freeman – the former doctor at British Cycling and Team Sky – was found by a medical tribunal to have ordered testosterone “knowing or believing” it was to be used to improve the performance of one of the team’s riders.”I wanted to find experts in high performance whatever that field, some who’ve been in the spotlight, others who’ve been in the background generating high-performance programmes or systems,” Strauss added. “Some with cricket knowledge and expertise, others from a wider sporting background. People with different experiences, who have undergone different journeys, but all of whom we can learn from. And people who are all keen to help cricket.”Strauss added that views would also be sought from cricket’s supporters, and that the whole process would have oversight from a group of first-class county chairs. The remit of the review will not, however, take in the international schedule, nor will it tackle the specifics of the domestic calendar until the remodelled structures have been put in place.”I read a lot of speculation about the domestic competition structure. Of course, this is an important part of the picture, but it’s not the only part,” Strauss added. “The review is designed to look at the high-performance system in its entirely, including the England men’s pathway and our high performance set-up.”And let’s be clear – we have no pre-built solution. At this stage the project is only just starting. There are no hidden agendas. I wouldn’t be bothering to carry out a review if I was already sitting here with specific proposals for change.”

Sri Lanka aiming for back-to-back wins as Australia's injury woes continue

Five-match series moves to Colombo locked at 1-1 with Smith under a fitness cloud

Alex Malcolm18-Jun-2022Big pictureSri Lanka produced a stirring victory in game two to level the series thanks to an excellent bowling and fielding display. Australia collapsed under the pressure of a chase to lose 5 for 19 and be bowled out for just 189. It was Sri Lanka’s spinners, in the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga, who sparked the collapse with Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Wellalage taking two wickets each before Chamika Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera tore through the lower order. Karunaratne took the key wicket of Glenn Maxwell and produced a fine run out to remove Alex Carey to finish player of the match. Adding salt into Australia’s wounds, Steven Smith hurt his left quad while batting and is under a cloud heading into the 3rd ODI as the visitors’ injury toll continues to mount.Sri Lanka will take a lot of confidence from their performance having won without Hasaranga. The successful use of Dhananjaya, particularly in the powerplay to Australia’s openers, is a blueprint they will surely repeat again in this series. They do need more returns with the bat though as their entire top eight reached double figures but no one kicked on to make more than 36.Australia are also frustrated that their top order were unable to kick on in Pallekele. David Warner and Smith both played well but made errors at important times. Australia vice-captain Alex Carey noted ahead of game three that the top order was keen to take the game deeper and produce bigger partnerships. They are also keen to sharpen up in the field after two untidy performances in the first two ODIs. But Australia bowled well in game two with debutant Matthew Kuhnemann producing a fine display after he was called in to replace Ashton Agar.Recent form(last five matches, most recent first)Sri Lanka WLWLW

He’s made five scores of 50+ in 13 innings but never passed 77. He’s looked in good touch throughout the T20Is and ODIs so far this month but has yet to kick on. Sri Lanka really need him to take the game deeper in the absence of Hasaranga so that he can utilise his power in the last 10 overs and set the home side up for a big score.Matthew Kuhnemann was extremely impressive on international debut in Pallekele. He flew in from the Australia A game at Hambantota on a helicopter at short notice and bowled and fielded superbly, picking two wickets and taking two very good catches. Even more impressive was the fact that he bowled inside the powerplay on debut to great effect, something Ashton Agar does not often do. Kuhnemann has a chance in the rest of this series to continue to rise up Australia’s pecking order of spinners and make a case to be in the Test squad if Agar’s side injury does not heal in time.Team newsSri Lanka could well go unchanged into game three if Hasaranga is still unavailable due to a groin strain. Their well-balanced attack troubled Australia and gave Dasun Shanaka options but the batting does still look a little vulnerable. They could bring in Bhanuka Rajapaksa, leave out Vandersay, and use Dhananjaya’s full quota of overs. But it seems unlikely.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Dhananjaya de Silva, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 7 Chamika Karunaratne, 8 Dunith Wellalage, 9 Dushmantha Chameera, 10 Jeffrey Vandersay, 11 Maheesh TheekshanaThere are question marks over Smith but he hasn’t yet been ruled out. Mitchell Marsh (calf) or Mitchell Starc (finger) are both unlikely to be fit although both are close to returning. Cameron Green is available to bowl which could see him return to the side. He could come in and give Aaron Finch seven bowling options, with Head possibly sliding up the order to No.3 if Smith is ruled out. The only way Mitchell Marsh plays is if he doesn’t bowl. Australia also have Josh Inglis available if need be to replace Smith.Australia (possible): 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Steven Smith/Travis Head, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Alex Carey (wk), 6 Cameron Green, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Swepson, 10 Matthew Kuhnemann, 11 Josh HazlewoodPitch and conditionsRain could play a part again with both games in Pallekele interrupted. There is a stray thunderstorm forecast for the afternoon. A fresh pitch at R Premadasa Stadium might not take as much turn as the surface in Pallekele but the spinners should still play a part.Stats and trivia Australia have played 17 ODIs at R Premadasa and only once made more than 250. Their highest score at the venue is 263 for 7 against Zimbabwe in 1996. Sri Lanka have not won a bilateral ODI series against Australia in Sri Lanka since 1992. Australia have won the last three in 2004, 2011 and 2016.Quotes”We lost wickets at crucial times and just couldn’t get a partnership of any real substance. So we will reflect on that. We’re at a new venue so we’ll take all the information in as best we can today and when we get into it tomorrow.”
