Reporter issues exciting Rangers transfer update on new forward signing

Despite already welcoming Fabio Silva earlier this month, Rangers are reportedly working on a deal to sign another forward before the end of January, with the impending sale of Ridvan Yilmaz going a long way to funding that arrival.

Rangers still want another forward

After swapping Sam Lammers for Silva, sending the former on loan to Dutch side Utrecht, it seems as though Rangers still want to add to Philippe Clement's attacking options in the Scottish Premiership. This has seen them linked with moves for in-form Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland as well as for former Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi, although the latter is thought to have collapsed.

It remains to be seen just who will arrive at Ibrox, but the sale of Yilmaz could play a crucial part in any deal. Rangers recently rejected a loan to buy offer from Galatasaray worth €4m (£3m), but reports in Turkey believe a deal is now close for Yilmaz to join Gala. The left-back has struggled to make the role his own since arriving at Rangers in 2022, and whilst Borna Barisic's departure when his contract expires this summer is also looming, it seems the 22 year-old is on his way out.

Ridvan Yilmaz

Speaking about Yilmaz's future recently, Clement said via The Daily Record: “Ridvan is here and he started the game. We will see [what happens]. Players also need to show they really want to be here in the next couple of months. We need to be prepared for everything, for every position also and make sure that we have solutions. That is one position [left back] that we have two players.

"One is [nearing the] end of contract, the other one there is a lot of rumours around. So it’s clear that we need to be ready for that position. We cannot go on in three competitions with one left-back. That is correct. And in other positions it is the same.”

The Gers are reportedly eyeing up a swoop to sign the talented young forward.

ByDan Emery Jan 16, 2024

Ibrox chiefs could now use Yilmaz's potential sale to fund a new forward. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Rangers are working on a deal to sign another forward this month and could use the left-back's potential sale to fund that fresh face in Clement's frontline. Injuries to Danilo and Kemar Roofe on top of Lammers' loan departure have left the Gers short on options going forward, perhaps forcing their hand to pursue an additional attacker. Eight points adrift of Celtic with two games in hand, Rangers could certainly do with the added firepower.

New striker the key for Rangers' title hopes

After seeing all of their hard work become undone in an Old Firm derby defeat, Rangers once again find themselves behind in the Scottish Premiership title race, though this month could yet swing the tide back in their favour. Rumours previously linking the title challengers to Batshuayi are particularly interesting, given the Belgian's experience as a Premier League-winning striker – it at least shows the club are extremely serious about giving Clement the firepower he needs.

As the transfer window goes on, the Gers could be one of the most interesting sides to watch, as Clement looks to make his mark in his first transfer window at Ibrox.

Clement could land Cantwell 2.0 in Rangers move for "lively" 6ft1 gem

Glasgow Rangers have less than two weeks to bring in another few players before the January transfer window closes and some fresh faces could be imperative regarding their Premiership title challenge.

Philippe Clement has his eyes on a few players, but it does not look like he will have much to spend this month and may have to chase loan deals.

Amid all the recent names mentioned is a player currently shining in the Championship, and he could be a worthwhile addition to the squad…

Rangers’ search for a new striker

According to Football Insider, the Gers are plotting a move for Bristol City striker Tommy Conway following his recent run of good form which culminated in him scoring the winner against West Ham United in the FA Cup in midweek.

The Ibrox side are not the only club interested in securing his services however, as rivals Celtic, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Brentford are also keen.

Tommy Conway celebrates for Bristol City.

It is no secret that the Gers require more firepower in their squad ahead of the second half of the season and Conway could be a shrewd move.

Last season, Michael Beale signed Todd Cantwell from Championship side Norwich City, and he enjoyed a wonderful first six months at the club.

Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 9, 2024

Could Clement repeat this masterclass and sign Cantwell 2.0 with a move for Conway?

What Tommy Conway could offer Rangers

Cantwell arrived amid much hype last year, especially considering he was valued at £40m just 18 months prior, and it didn’t take him long to settle.

Over his first 20 matches for the Gers, the Englishman scored six goals – including one against Celtic – and registered five assists, proving to be a solid acquisition by Beale.

While he has yet to hit those heights in the current campaign, he has already registered seven goal contributions thus far and this could set him up for a few important months ahead.

Conway enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2022/23, scoring nine goals in the Championship along with three in the EFL Cup and he was previously hailed as “lively” by former City manager Nigel Pearson upon making his debut in 2021.

Despite missing nine matches due to a hamstring injury this term, Conway has still netted eight goals in 22 outings, which includes two against West Ham in their two FA Cup ties recently, clearly showing that he can perform against the elite.

Indeed, the 6 foot 1 forward currently ranks first among the City squad for shots on target per game in the second tier (0.8), along with ranking second for goals and assists (six), and it is clear he could be a reliable threat in front of goal for Clement.

The key thing is, the England-born, Scotland U21 international is still only 21 and will likely get better over the next few years, which could encourage Clement to make a move for him sooner rather than later.

Cantwell demonstrated his qualities when arriving from the Championship last season and there is no doubt Conway could repeat the trick should he move north of the border.

The question is, will Clement have the necessary funds to sign him this month?

Bereaved Asif Ali to play in World Cup

The middle order batsman has lost his 19-month old daughter after a long battle with illness, but is scheduled to join the squad for the warm-up matches

ESPNcricinfo staff20-May-2019Asif Ali will play in the World Cup despite the death of his daughter on Sunday. Asif was called up to Pakistan’s 15-man squad for the World Cup on Monday, having missed out on the original squad a month ago.He was selected on the back of some impressive performances during the England series, where two fifties contributed to a total of 142 runs (in four innings) but, more importantly, at a strike rate of 131.48. Those runs, and the speed at which they came, filled a gaping hole in Pakistan’s middle order, which has long cried out for a power-hitter of Asif’s capabilities. But the joy of his selection would have been drowned out by the tragic news of his 19-month-old daughter passing away in the United States of America on Sunday, after a fairly long battle against illness.Asif will exit the squad for now, and arrangements are being made for him to travel to the US if needed. But at the moment, he is scheduled to be back for Pakistan’s World Cup campaign, which begins with a game against West Indies on May 31 at Trent Bridge.”Dropping Abid Ali [to make way for Asif’s selection] was a very difficult decision,” Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s chief selector, said on Monday. “But we needed a power-hitter at number 6 or 7 and Asif has done very well for us in this England series so we need him.”He is scheduled to be back in time for our warm-up games where we intend to play our full-strength XI, but if he cannot make it back in time for those, we will wait for him whenever he does return.”Abid was the third opener in the provisional World Cup squad, back up for Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman, but Inzamam said that with either of Mohammad Hafeez or Haris Sohail – who are both in the squad – could also be options if another opener was needed.

Both Ronaldo and Messi have left the European centre stage and have set sail for the Saudi Pro League and the MLS respectively. And in the absence of the two stalwarts, Mbappe and Haaland are being touted as their heirs to the vacant throne.

Haaland has taken a march over Mbappe by winning the treble with Manchester City in 2022-23 but had an underwhelming season – according to his lofty standards- with 38 goals in 45 matches. However, the French superstar is not far behind as he boasts of a World Cup gold medal and two consecutive final appearances to claim a seat among the greatest.

WHAT LOUIS SAHA SAID

Nonetheless, Manchester United legend, Loius Saha, is convinced that neither Mbappe nor Haaland can surpass the levels of Messi and Ronaldo.

"I totally understand why there are so many fans of Lionel Messi and I totally understand why myself and a lot of other people are fans of Cristiano Ronaldo," he told

"You can’t really separate those two guys because they are tremendous talents and they’re not at all the same. It’s just two different players. One is almost a natural genius in Messi who had to adapt his game to be the very best for his size and height. Ronaldo has used his height and power to go and score over 900 goals. So you have two different players with different styles and attributes.

"Those are the two players in this era who have simply topped their talent, their potential. You can’t ask much more. You will never see it again. You may have Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe fighting for 10 years but it’s never going to be close in terms of greatness, if they want to catch Messi and Ronaldo then they have to score 50 goals a season for the remainder of their careers, it’s impossible."

England, Pakistan look poles apart heading into World Cup match on record pitch

Pakistan’s surrender to short bowling in opening game means they can expect more of the same from hosts

The Preview by Danyal Rasool02-Jun-2019Big PictureGiven what’s transpired in this World Cup over the first four days, it might not be a stretch to call this one of the tournament’s great mismatches, insomuch as the ICC would admit to ten-team World Cups also producing mismatches. England, surely, have bigger challenges ahead, with this game a routine stepping stone to their inexorable march to Lord’s six weeks from now. The way Pakistan folded in that first game of their World Cup campaign at the same venue in Nottingham, Lahore seems a lot closer than London for them, if only in terms of likely destination rather than actual proximity.England’s progress continues to be so eerily serene the natural pessimists who followed their cricket in the 1990s feel sure something will come unstuck along the line. And yet if fate has that cruel twist in store for them, it’s hiding it exceptionally well. The first game was as emblematic of England’s evolution in ODI cricket as any contest has been in the four years since this Eoin Morgan-led team became a world force, the pressure of the big occasion barely registering as they brushed aside South Africa. When Jonny Bairstow was removed for a golden duck, there was no alarm; four batsmen scored half-centuries to cover for the failure. Of course, the bowlers and fielders backed them up, almost erasing that little blip from memory. For Pakistan, the time for chaos, panic, recriminations and reckoning that follows most World Cup campaign feels it’s drawing ever-nearer. The first game of the tournament for them was Pakistan at their worst: weak, seemingly ill-prepared, timid and gormless. It was one of the bleakest days in the history of Pakistan at the World Cup – and make no mistake, Pakistan have had plenty of those. Their surrender in the face of a short bowling barrage from West Indies means they can expect much the same against England, whose bowlers will keep them on the back foot so long they might bruise their Achilles heels. These two sides played each other in a five-match series just last month, and while England won 4-0, there was no sign of the Pakistan that showed up against West Indies. Indeed, it was the sort of series defeat that allowed Pakistan plenty of positives. They scored above 340 three times out of four against that England attack, and most top-order batsmen got runs. So if the West Indies game was Pakistan at their worst, they can only improve. Pakistan believe they are much closer to the team that almost beat England in two of the four completed games. That was only a fortnight ago, but given what’s happened since, it doesn’t feel as recent. For both England and Pakistan, the ghost of the 1992 World Cup hovers above this fixture. For England, that was their last successful – some might say last respectable – World Cup campaign, but it was ended then by a Pakistan side in the final that began the tournament just as poorly as this one. Now, in a light blue strip seen as a respectful nod to the achievements of that Australian summer, England look to go one step further at home 27 years on. Pakistan, meanwhile, cannot stop thinking or talking about that World Cup, both for inspiration and hope, though if they are to put up the same showing tomorrow as they did on Friday, those comparisons will begin to ring more and more hollow.Form guideEngland WWWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan LLLLLIn the spotlightIf only for Pakistan’s travails against the short ball, Jofra Archer will take centre stage in an even bigger way than he has done for all sorts of reasons over the past month. With none other than Waqar Younis saying Archer would be “licking his lips” at the thought of bowling to Pakistan’s batsmen, the England seamer has the opportunity to play to his natural strengths, using his raw pace to push Pakistan’s batsmen back. He began the tournament in ominous fashion with 3 for 27 against South Africa to rip out their middle order, and against Pakistan in the washed-out first ODI at The Oval, his four-over burst was so fiercely effective it was arguably the day Archer’s ticket to the World Cup was punched. Pakistan are there for the taking again, and England have just the man for the job.Jofra Archer bowled with venom, picking up three key wickets•Getty ImagesIn times like these, the onus falls on players of established, undisputed quality. Among their batting ranks, Pakistan can only name one player to fit that bill. Babar Azam has effortlessly become the leader of the batting line-up, and with numbers like his in a team that has long cried out for a successor to Inzamam, Mohammad Yousaf and Younis Khan, it’s hardly a surprise. Two fifties and a hundred in the recent series against England means he has form – Babar always has form. And when an entire side, as Pakistan do now, look to have been technically exposed by one simple plan, it is Babar who must step up and establish that the West Indies game was an aberration. He must also do it at a strike rate that has a chance of challenging England; his 112-ball 115 at this venue a fortnight ago copped criticism for being too slow against a team like England. No pressure, then.Team newsGiven how comfortable England were in their mauling of South Africa, an unchanged side wouldn’t be a surprise. But England’s strength in depth means changes wouldn’t necessarily expose weakness, so the substitutes are ready to go, should they be called upon.England: (possible) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Mark Wood, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jofra Archer.Pakistan’s lack of power hitting, in sharp contrast to England, means Asif Ali should come back into the side, not least because of his performance in the ODI series against the home side. With the wicket expected to be flat and slow, Imad Wasim could find himself surplus to requirements, with Shoaib Malik – a batting allrounder – more likely to be favoured following Pakistan’s showing against West Indies.Pakistan: (possible) 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Shoaib Malik, 5 Mohammad Hafeez , 6 Sarfaraz Ahmed, (capt,wk), 7 Asif Ali, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Hasan Ali / Mohammad Hasnain, 11 Wahab RiazPitch and conditionsIt rained heavily the day before the game, but the clouds are expected to clear for match day. The pitch – the same one on which England have twice broken the record for highest ODI score, most recently reaching 481 for 6 against Australia last year – is expected to be especially flat, but Morgan insisted it was quite different to that wicket in how it was expected to behave.Strategic punts Forget variation, forget unpredictability, let Jofra Archer bowl short to Pakistan. And consider playing Mark Wood instead of Liam Plunkett, allow his extra pace to trouble Pakistan that much more. For the bowlers, it should be a short strategy meeting. Give Shadab Khan the first over. Okay, this pitch might be different to the one where South Africa employed that strategy with Imran Tahir. But this isn’t about what the ground between the batsman and the bowler looks like, it’s about what’s going on between the ears of the man with bat in hand. Jason Roy was the man South Africa wanted to trouble with leg-spin; it ended up dismissing Jonny Bairstow instead. Let Babar Azam open the batting instead of Fakhar Zaman. England’s high-class bowlers need to be countered with Pakistan’s two technically tightest batsmen. Fakhar will struggle against the short ball, and England won’t give him the room he needs to play his shots. Leave him for when the opening bowlers are done, and ensure early wickets aren’t lost.Stats and trivia Jason Roy is eight runs away from completing 3000 career ODI runs. It will make him the fourth player in the current England setup to reach the mark, behind Morgan, Joe Root and Jos Buttler. Pakistan and England have played each other nine times in ODI World Cups, with four wins apiece and one no-result in the group stages of the 1992 World Cup.Quotes”It’s well known we enjoy chasing. We don’t mind setting either but we do enjoy chasing. There is a small advantage to it, knowing what you’re trying to get.”

“They have to play 300 balls to get to that record, but we have to bowl 10 good balls to get 10 wickets.”

Spurs schedule talks to sign Son 2.0 in a deal that could be done ASAP

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be eyeing up their third signing of the January transfer window after deals for Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin…

Spurs' search for a new winger

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Lilywhites are pushing to secure a deal for Club Brugge forward Antonio Nusa to bolster their attack.

The reporter claims that a new round of talks between the two clubs has been scheduled as Spurs look to beat off competition from elsewhere to sign the young whiz.

Antonio Nusa in Norway training.

However, Romano adds that the teenage dynamo would like to remain at the Belgian side until the end of the season, which means that Ange Postecoglou may not have him as part of the squad until the summer.

The Australian head coach could land Heung-min Son 2.0 by winning the race to sign the 18-year-old forward, who The Guardian previously claimed is valued at £25m by Brugge.

Heung-min Son's goal record at Spurs

Tottenham's captain has proven himself to be a lethal scorer for the club from a left wing position over the course of a number of seasons in England.

The South Korea international has plundered an exceptional 157 goals and 85 assists in 393 appearances in all competitions, including 115 goals in 288 Premier League matches.

This means that Son has averaged a goal or an assist every 1.62 games on average throughout his career with Spurs, which shows that he has been a consistently reliable attacking threat out wide as a scorer and a creator of goals.

However, he turns 32 in July, and Postecoglou may have one eye on the future and what life will look like after Son, with Nusa possibly coming in as the long-term successor to his position.

The stats that show why Nusa could be Son 2.0

The 18-year-old has showcased his potential for club and country this season with an impressive return at the top end of the pitch despite limited minutes on the pitch.

Nusa has only started six Pro League matches for Brugge but has chipped in with three goals and two assists, whilst he has also created five 'big chances' for his teammates and could argue that they have let him down in front of goal with their wasteful finishing.

The right-footed left winger, who U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed has "beautiful potential", has also completed 2.7 dribbles per game for his club in the league.

As you can see in the table above, the Brugge starlet has also caught the eye on the international stage with Norway this season with some impressively creative performances for his country.

Nusa has racked up three goals and five assists in seven starts across the Pro League and European Championship qualifiers for club and country this season, which is one goal contribution every 0.86 starts on average.

There is no guarantee that he would be able to remain as consistent as that over the course of an entire season of regular starts but the young gem also has plenty of time on his side to develop that consistency.

The Brugge wizard could learn from Son at Spurs before eventually taking over as his successor and Postecoglou's next version of the South Korean marksman further down the line if he can fulfill his potential, which is why this could be an excellent signing for Spurs.

Rangers could move for "great" new player to finally solve Clement’s issue

Hoping to turn the tide on Celtic in the race to secure the Scottish Premiership title, Rangers enjoyed a busy January transfer window, welcoming as a number of reinforcements for Philippe Clement's side. Now, even after the deadline, they could add another fresh face.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers left it late, but did eventually add Oscar Cortes to the already-arrived Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande. After the winger put pen to paper on a loan deal until the end of the season, Clement expressed his delight over the move, saying via BBC Sport: “I am really delighted to add Oscar to our squad.

“Our discussions have been really positive, and I believe he will be a big asset to the squad as we fight across three fronts for the remainder of this season. Oscar is really enthusiastic about our aims and ambitions as a team, and his skillset will provide welcome competition to our forward line.”

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

One problem that those at Ibrox did fail to fix in the last month, however, is their striker issue, having watched on as Sam Lammers failed to make an impact since the summer before leaving on loan. They could yet find an unexpected solution, though. According to Ryan Rowe of The Scottish Sun, Rangers could move to sign Dwight Gayle, who has just been released from Stoke City and is, therefore, a free agent.

Those at Ibrox may have to fend off interest from Celtic to secure the former Premier League striker, but it could be a deal that ends up making a surprise difference. With the window now closed, Gayle could be Clement's only hope of finding a solution to his forward woes in the remainder of the Scottish Premiership campaign.

Rangers should take chance on "great" Gayle

Whilst things didn't work out at Stoke, Gayle has shown in the past that he is more than capable of finding the back of the net. At 34 years old, he is now seeking one more chance to prove that, and Rangers, with nothing to lose, should take a chance on the striker, especially given that it would be a free deal. Gayle's Championship record shows how clinical he can be.

Earning plenty of praise during his time at Newcastle United, Rafael Benitez had nothing but good things to say about Gayle. The former manager said via Chronicle Live: "It is not just because he is scoring goals, he is working hard and was also doing a great job today between the lines. And you could see that the wingers and the midfielders are running more along with the defence."

Now, Clement will be hoping to benefit from the forward returning to his best form. As the Scottish Premiership title race comes to a head, a consistent goalscorer leading the line may well prove all the difference in a season-defining move for those at Rangers.
