Leeds: Whites keen on Matheus Pereira

Leeds United are thought to be keen on bringing West Brom star Matheus Pereira to Elland Road this summer.

The Lowdown: Leeds fans wanted him signed

Pereira has been part of a Baggies side who have failed to remain in the Premier League after they came up alongside the Whites last season, with their relegation back to the Championship confirmed on Sunday.

The 25-year-old has starred at The Hawthorns, though, scoring 10 times and registering five assists in 31 league appearances.

His display against Southampton last month caught the eye of some Whites supporters, who urged the club to move for the Brazilian in the upcoming window.

The Latest: Orta and co not the only ones keen

According to the Daily Express, the Whites are now in fact interested in Pereira, who is on £39,000-a-week in the Midlands.

Leicester, RB Leipzig and West Ham are also keen on Pereira’s services, with the Baggies anticipated to demand up to £30m for the attacking midfielder described as a ‘great talent’ by Michael Brown.

So much interest from top sides is perhaps no surprise given the quality the Brazilian has shown in such a poor side this term.

The Verdict: Orta should try his luck

Victor Orta, who is of course the main man when it comes to transfer dealings at Elland Road, should make a move for Pereira ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Leeds hero Pablo Hernandez looks set to move on in the summer, so Pereira could come in to seriously rival the likes of Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts in a number 10 role.

Should Pereira move to Yorkshire, that may also then allow Rodrigo to rival Patrick Bamford as a starting striker, with the Brazilian occupying a position behind the forward.

He could well come at a club-record price, but he’s managed to produce two brilliant personal seasons in England now, and could fit into Marcelo Bielsa’s attack-minded squad with ease, as he is also capable of playing on either wing.

WHU fans slam Benrahma vs Everton

Many West Ham United fans were livid with the performance of Said Benrahma during their 1-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday.

The Hammers’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were dealt a  blow against the Toffees as they succumbed to a single Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal. They remain in fifth place in the Premier League table but trail Leicester, the team directly above them, by five points with just three games left to play (Sky Sports).

Algeria international Benhrama was named in the starting line-up by David Moyes but he flattered to deceive. He lost possession of the ball 17 times throughout the match (SofaScore) and failed to have a telling impact on the game. Despite signing for the Irons last October, he is yet to score a goal in the Premier League in 27 appearances (Transfermarkt).

These Irons supporters were far from happy with what they saw from the former Brentford man, who ne fan disparaged as a “waste of space”, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Benrahma

“Benrahma was a waste of space today, nothing like PL quality. Sick to death with hearing this fans love in that he is a new Payet. Nowhere near a £30m player. Who bought him, Moyes or Sullivan and his agent mate?”

“Personally I always thought Moyes seemed a little harsh on Benrahma but he’s 100% spot on.”

“He’s a letdown and feel he should be sold, Eze clearly was the player we should have got.”

“Benrahma was poor today and probably isn’t a 30m player, but Lingard has been terrible last few too and Bowen had been very average for a while”

“He’s just so bad. And the people who go on like he’s our best player make me hate him even more”

“Benrahma is the worst West Ham signing in the past 10 years Has 1 good game in every 20”

West Indies have enormous worries

It’s easier to remove Lord Nelson’s statue from Heroes Square than tocaptain the West Indies team at the moment

Andi Thornhill16-May-2001It’s easier to remove Lord Nelson’s statue from Heroes Square than tocaptain the West Indies team at the moment.Skipper Carl Hooper should have known this better than anybody elsebecause he said, while he was in exile, that personnel changes wouldnot solve all the problems in West Indies cricket for they are toomany and too diversed.I don’t see how he could think that things would have changed in hisshort stint at the helm. That would have taken a Jesus-like miraclesince the administrative structure is the same and there is still thenucleus of the team that he inherited.Yet some of Hooper’s recent behaviour suggests that he anticipatedthere would have been an immediate overhaul in their attitude andapplication to playing and that the results would be different. How else could you put into context his rash statement that even ifSteve Waugh was captain the team still would not win? This is clearlythe reaction of a man who is beginning to feel the pressure of leadinga team that is continuing to perform way below par most of the time. However, it is obvious that a chronic case of foot-in-mouth diseasewill do more to hurt his cause than help it because when you speakwith a loose tongue you merely serve to undermine the confidence ofyour team and then it will be hard to ask them to lift theirperformance once they get in the middle. After all, they have feelings and while I won’t want to suggest thatthey will under-perform deliberately to embarrass the skipper, it isquite possible that they will be less inclined to give 100 per centfor a man who seeks to put them down in public than if he was moresympathetic to their failings.Hooper might be frustrated but he must take into account that with thesquad already getting a tongue lashing from millions of disappointedand angry supporters they need all the internal support they can getto stay grounded else the boat would sink even in shallow waters.Perhaps only Brian Lara and himself will qualify for this exclusiveleague of being world-class, therefore reticence and discretionarylanguage must be the order of the day in evaluating the merits of theside especially, I emphasise, when it comes to making publicpronouncements.Obviously the players will still be annoyed but I think they will takeit a lot better if Hooper reserves some of his untimely comments forthe dressing room and not at the table of a Press conference.Usually, they can’t wait to pounce on the wounded, why give them moreammunition than they need to finish the job? The West Indiescricketers can ill afford such a situation where they are alreadycoming out second best by a long, long way. This will be a long tedious period of transition and it will requireplenty of patience from all the stakeholders in West Indies cricket. We must present a united front to the world as we bid to reclaim theglory days.In the short-term and even the long-term people like Hooper will needto be giving both the players and the genuine supporters a greatermeasure of reassurance that all is not lost and that with time, withthe right methods and right attitudes in place we can resurface as amajor force in the world game.Hooper needs to ponder on these things before he puts his foot in hismouth again. He does not need to make his job any harder than italready is.

Wolves: Vitinha was poor vs Tottenham

Since being promoted to the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been one of the most consistent sides around.

They have finished just outside the top six in each of the last two seasons, providing some captivating performances against the bigger sides.

However, 2020/21 has been particularly unkind to Wolves. Nuno Santo’s men have been pillaged by injuries and they have become the very definition of inconsistent. They are incredibly hard to predict, something the last fortnight or so has depicted.

They were drubbed 4-0 by Burnley but then looked back to their best as they came from behind to defeat Brighton.

Though, against an improving Tottenham side on Sunday, they weren’t really at the races. Nuno’s men were beaten 2-0 and in all honesty, they never really looked like finding the net with any certainty.

Fabio Silva spurned a succession of good chances but he wasn’t helped by the young duo of Morgan Gibbs-White and Vitinha behind him.

Both players have starred in recent weeks with the latter playing a vital hand in the win over West Brom. Gibbs-White, meanwhile, scored his first Premier League goal against Brighton just over a week ago.

On this occasion, though, Vitinha was disappointing.

Opportunities had been few and far between for the 21-year-old since he arrived at Molineux on loan but he’s been handed several chances now in the final weeks of the season.

A tricky character, the Portuguese had provided five key passes and three dribbles in the two outings with West Brom and Brighton.

Yet, that guile and creativity was missing in north London on Sunday. His performance was described as “poor” by Wolves reporter Tim Spiers at full time and it’s easy to see why.

Vitinha’s numbers were down considerably from what we’ve come to expect as he was hauled off just after the hour mark having made just one key pass. On top of that, the youngster failed to even attempt a dribble, a statistic completely out of character.

He produced just 14 passes and took fewer touches (30) than goalkeeper Rui Patricio (31).

The loanee did prevail in two of his three defensive duels but in terms of offering a threat to the Spurs goal, he left plenty to be desired.

Vitinha has caught the eye of late, so much so that Wolves could utilise their option to buy the promising Porto midfielder in the summer.

That said, he’ll need to show more than he did at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; this was a rare troubled display.

Wood and Lehmann hit tons as draw at Bath seems inevitable

The 50th first-class hundred of Darren Lehmann’s career and a century fromyoungster Matthew Wood guided Yorkshire to maximum batting bonus points inthe Bath Festival match with Somerset

Mark Easterbrook15-Jun-2001The 50th first-class hundred of Darren Lehmann’s career and a century fromyoungster Matthew Wood guided Yorkshire to maximum batting bonus points inthe Bath Festival match with Somerset. The visitors closed day three on 425-4 in response to Somerset’s 553-5declared and a draw looks inevitable in this Division One confrontation.Wood, who put on 179 for the opening wicket with Scott Richardson, struck124 from 223 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes. He reached his century in style with a pulled six off Jason Kerr and it wasthe first time he had made a hundred since the opening Championship game oflast year against Derbyshire. Pace bowler Richard Johnson finally breached Wood’s defences with a delivery that knocked back his off stump. But well as Johnson and spinner Keith Dutch bowled, there was little joy tobe found in an excellent batting pitch. It might have been different had Lehmann not been dropped by Kerr atmid-wicket, off Somerset’s Matthew Wood, when on 49. That would have leftYorkshire on 305-5 and in possible danger of not reaching the follow-ontarget of 404. Instead, Lehmann and Gary Fellows shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 144.Lehmann reached his century with a single to square leg off Peter Trego andhis 136-ball effort had contained 12 fours and a six.He then enjoyed another piece of luck when, on 103, Piran Holloway missed achance at slip off Dutch.Somerset suffered a setback before play started when X-rays revealed thatcaptain Jamie Cox had fractured the thumb on his left hand while attemptingto stop a boundary from Wood yesterday. He expects to be out for around twoto three weeks.Despite seeing table-toppers Yorkshire bat all day, Somerset coach Kevin Shine remained in upbeat mood.”We bowled very well indeed, it was an impressive fielding display. Our bowlers regularly passed the bat, I’m proud of the way that they stuck at it. We looked like a quality side who could take wickets.”He felt that all the bowlers had performed well, particularly Keith Dutch – “the best I think that I’ve ever seen Duchy bowl” – and Richard Johnson. who “bowled with real pace and bounce”.When asked about the outcome of the match, he said: “If they had wanted to make a game of it then they would have declared tonight. As it is they will probably bat through and leave us to bat the final day out which we should be able to do on that wicket.”

Southampton dealt Randal Kolo Muani setback

Southampton’s hopes of signing Nantes striker Randal Kolo Muani this summer have suffered a blow after Crystal Palace reportedly joined the race to sign the Frenchman.

According to Le10 Sport (via Sport Witness), Southampton and Crystal Palace are in a ‘tussle’ to sign the young striker this summer, whilst Watford and Lyon have also been credited with an interest.

The £6.3m-rated forward has impressed with the Ligue 1 side this season, making 36 appearances in the French top flight, in which he has contributed eight goals and four assists, averaging a solid 6.89 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This is enough to rank the 22-year-old as the second-best performer in Antoine Kombouaré’s side so far this season, which emphasises just how important he is for Nantes.

Considering that Les Canaris could still go down this season, as they currently occupy a relegation play-off spot, Muani’s goal return is very impressive for someone so young and suggests that he could be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s side this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

However, now that Crystal Palace are interested in the Frenchman, who has been likened to PSG sensation Kylian Mbappe, it may force a bidding war between the two clubs. That could be bad news for Southampton, as Ralph Hasenhuttl has already suggested that the Saints will target players under £10m this summer, and Nantes may well take advantage of the interest being shown in Muani by raising his asking price.

The Frenchman recently rejected the offer of a contract extension at the Stade de la Beaujoire, which suggests that he will be on the move this summer, and Southampton must try and be the team to capitalise.

With Danny Ings’ future still uncertain, a new striker such as Muani should definitely be on Hasenhuttl’s list ahead of next season, and Muani appears to have a great deal of potential.

Therefore, Saints vice-chairman Martin Semmens should definitely act quickly to try and secure a deal for the French striker ahead of next season, as he is clearly a man in demand and Southampton may end up missing out if they fail to land him.

Sharjah offers chance for second tier development

New Zealand’s one-day team to tour Sharjah and Pakistan is to be named tomorrow on what should be the next phase of the side’s World Cup ’03 development

Lynn McConnell31-Mar-2002New Zealand’s one-day team to tour Sharjah and Pakistan is to be named tomorrow on what should be the next phase of the side’s World Cup ’03 development. But such is the injury count at the moment that it can only be an exercise in match strategy involving some of the second tier of players who may or may not be called on in the final count, depending on the injuries down the line.Out of consideration are: Chris Cairns, Shane Bond, Dion Nash and it could be that the national selectors decide that Daniel Vettori deserves a rest in preparation for the Pakistan Test series which follows the two one-day exercises in Sharjah and Pakistan.Fourteen players are to be named for the tour which includes a minimum of four games in Sharjah and three in Pakistan. In Sharjah, New Zealand play Sri Lanka on April 9, Pakistan on April 11, Sri Lanka on April 14 and Pakistan again on April 15.The tournament final is to be played on April 17.The basis of the side obviously has to be the team which beat England 3-2 and which made the finals of the VB Series in Australia. That would see: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Chris Harris, Daryl Tuffey and Andre Adams as certainties for the side.Chris Nevin should be retained as wicket-keeper and with the absence of Adam Parore for future consideration, there is a chance for him to claim the position for himself with the gloves and as an opener. If the selectors decide that Vettori is still in good enough condition to make the tour then he too, will be in the automatic category. However, if he is rested, then Auckland’s Brooke Walker must be the favoured option. He has had chances in the past and while he was covering for injury to Vettori, there must be hope that he has had a chance to absorb the lessons and be reconsidered.Glen Sulzberger has also been part of the mix in recent times and it could be that he gains his place if two spinners are preferred. One important decision that will be made is whether Brendon McCullum holds his place in the squad. He is a long term investment by the selectors and he has too much to offer to be placed on the substitutes’ bench and he should retain his spot.James Franklin should also be recalled to the side to continue his education in international play and his recent run scoring for Wellington will have been appreciated by the selectors.Another consideration will be Central Districts’ captain Jacob Oram back in action after missing much of the season with a foot injury. He was shaping as a key element in New Zealand’s one-day planning after last summer and given the on-going problems with Cairns, he should be a consideration for the side. The final choice will be in the bowling attack. Whether Scott Styris offers anything more in the bowling than that offered already in the attack and it may be that a workhorse-type of bowler like Chris Drum, especially with the Pakistan leg of the tour in mind, catches the selectors’ eyes. That would leave the team possibly looking like: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Chris Nevin, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Chris Harris, Daniel Vettori/Brooke Walker, Glen Sulzberger, Daryl Tuffey, Andre Adams, James Franklin, Jacob Oram, Chris Drum.

Anderson looks forward to Golden Jubilee Day on May 12th

Three weeks today at the County Ground in Taunton Somerset will mark the Queens Golden Jubilee with their own day of celebration and with the new season almost underway in earnest the thoughts of Somerset Chief Executive are turning to this special

Richard Walsh21-Apr-2002Three weeks today at the County Ground in Taunton Somerset will mark the Queens Golden Jubilee with their own day of celebration and with the new season almost underway in earnest the thoughts of Somerset Chief Executive are turning to this special occasion.Out on the field Somerset Sabres will be taking on Yorkshire Phoenix who are likely to be out to seek revenge for the defeat they suffered at Bath last season, but events off the field are also likely to be of considerable interest to the significant numbers who are anticipated to turn up for what will be another special day for Somerset cricket.Mr Anderson paid tribute to the `heroes of Somerset cricket’ who will be presented with Golden Jubilee Awards during the tea interval on that day.The Chief Executive told me: "Fifty years of service to your country is a tremendous achievement that we need to mark in a special way, which is why we designated fifty Golden Jubilee Awards. We have sought to award the medals to the unsung heroes who have kept their local cricket clubs going, many for at least fifty years some for a good deal longer.”In the morning the club’s Annual Church Service will take place at St James Church, when the guest preacher will be former Sussex all rounder John Barclay .Later in the day the new Sir Vivian Richards gates at the Priory Road entrance to the ground will be officially opened by the great man himself, and during the tea interval the Golden Jubilee Awards will be presented.Mr Anderson concluded: "This will be a special day for the club, and we are hoping that our supporters will come along in force to help make this a really memorable occasion."
